Darius Slay wants to play at least one more season in the NFL, eyes return to Philly or a reunion in Detroit with the Lions

Darius Slay hopped on the Amon-Ra St. Brown podcast and made it clear he wants to play at least one more year. He continued in saying that if it isn’t here in Philly with the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles, then he wouldn’t “rule out” a return to Detroit.

Darius Slay on his future in the NFL:

“I got one more (year) left, but you know how that works… so whatever they wanna do, I might resign back hopefully, but if they ain’t, maybe I’ll see what we’re (?) doing because I do wanna play one more year for sure… I love Detroit, I got nothing but love, that’s my second home, I do a lot for the city still… For sure the two spots I would always love to be at are Philly and (Detroit).”

I’m not going to pretend that I have a damn clue on what the Mastermind Howie Roseman does with player contracts. It’s all very confusing with the webs of dead cap space, void years, and signing bonuses so I’ll happily defer to Over The Cap which made it a little less complicated in their explanation.

“Darius Slay renegotiated his contract with the Eagles. The new contract runs for 3 years and is worth $39 million with $24.5 millon guaranteed. Slay received a $10.185 million signing bonus and has a guaranteed option in the 2nd year of the contract.  There is another option in 2025 that is worth $16.1 million. The final four years of the contract are void years for salary cap purposes. The new contract reduced Slay’s salary cap number in 2023 by $14.283 million.”

Honestly, I think the Eagles and Howie need to give Darius Slay his flowers and make sure that he’s here next season. I don’t care about his connections with Detroit. I want Slay to retire in Eagles green. He was elite yet again this season and the other options at cornerback aren’t the best right now.

Of course, you have Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell but outside of that, there’s Kelee Ringo and the option to tender Isaiah Rodgers, who is currently a restricted free agent.

Get it done, Howie.
