The Case for Trading Up for Abdul Carter

Abdul Carter is widely regarded as one of the most explosive defensive prospects in the upcoming draft. A dominant force at Penn State, Carter led the nation in tackles for loss and showcased elite speed and agility off the edge. His versatility has drawn comparisons to the Cowboys’ Micah Parsons, making him a highly desirable addition for any NFL team looking to bolster its pass rush.

Not to mention, the guy is a huge Eagles fan. Every time he has an opportunity to talk Birds, he takes it. He gets this city, which already give him a slight advantage in this debate.

Pros:

  • High Ceiling and Longevity: Carter offers long-term upside with a rookie contract that provides financial flexibility.
  • Athleticism and Potential: His ability to drop into coverage and rush the passer makes him a perfect fit for the Eagles’ defensive scheme.
  • Defensive Line Rejuvenation: With a handful of pending free agents along with defensive line, securing a young, dynamic pass rusher could ensure the Eagles remain dominant up front.

Cons:

  • Injury Concerns: Carter recently suffered a foot injury that prevented him from participating in the NFL Combine, raising concerns about his durability.
  • Draft Capital Cost: Trading up to secure Carter would likely require sacrificing valuable picks, limiting flexibility in addressing other needs.

The Case for Trading for Myles Garrett

Myles Garrett, a six-time Pro Bowler and reigning two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is an established superstar. His ability to consistently disrupt opposing offenses makes him one of the most dominant edge rushers in the game. If Cleveland is willing to entertain offers, Garrett could be a game-changing addition to the Eagles’ already formidable defense.

Pros:

  • Proven Impact Player: Garrett is a known commodity, capable of delivering All-Pro production immediately.
  • Championship Window Optimization: Adding Garrett would maximize the Eagles’ chances of repeating as Super Bowl champions.
  • Leadership and Experience: His presence in the locker room could be invaluable for younger defenders.
  • Refreshes the Roster: The addition of Saquon Barkley last offseason made this team feel new and I think it helped them get over the late season collapse from 2023. This addition could have a similar effect and give this team a new sense of urgency as they attempt to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Cons:

  • High Acquisition Cost: Cleveland is unlikely to part with Garrett without significant draft capital or established players in return.
  • Salary Cap Implications: Integrating Garrett’s contract could restrict the Eagles from making other critical roster moves.

Eagles’ Best Path Forward

Both options present compelling cases. Abdul Carter offers youth, potential, and financial flexibility, but he remains unproven at the NFL level. Myles Garrett, on the other hand, would provide immediate impact but comes with a hefty financial and draft capital price tag.

If the Eagles are in full win-now mode, acquiring Garrett makes the most sense. His presence would immediately elevate their defensive front, complementing their existing talent and reinforcing their status as Super Bowl contenders. However, if Philadelphia wants to build a sustainable future while remaining competitive, trading up for Abdul Carter could be the smarter, long-term investment.

In the end, I’d go with Carter here. He’s good enough to step in day one and have an impact. Plus, you won’t have to pay him for at least 3-4 years. Given the Eagles current cap situation, that’s a huge advantage, especially if he blossoms as quickly as Jalen Carter did.

Ultimately, the decision will come down to whether the Eagles prioritize immediate dominance or long-term development. Either way, their next move could shape the franchise’s future for years to come.
