Eagles compensatory picks

Updated look at Eagles compensatory picks following free agent losses

The Philadelphia Eagles lost a handful of players during the first day of NFL free agency. Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Isaiah Rodgers all signed elsewhere.

While these losses aren’t ideal, the team has stocked up on compensatory draft picks in 2026 because of them. Not to mention, both Sweat and Williams signed deals well out of the Eagles price range, and frankly, out of the price range of any well-run organization. The Patriots and Cardinals paying out the ass for B-tier players is why they’re perpetually average.

Philly was awarded third, fourth, and sixth round picks in 2026.

Compensatory picks breakdown for the Eagles:

  • Milton Williams: 2026 third-round pick
  • Josh Sweat: 2026 fourth-round pick
  • Isaiah Rodgers: 2026 sixth-round pick

Compensatory picks are a bit odd, so here’s a quick breakdown.

In the NFL, compensatory draft picks are awarded to teams that lose more compensatory free agents (CFAs) than they sign during the prior offseason. These picks are granted at the end of Rounds 3 through 7 of the NFL Draft, with the league using a formula to determine the value of lost versus gained players.

How It Works

  1. Qualifying Free Agents
    • A player must leave in free agency after their contract expires (not cut/released).
    • The team cannot have re-signed the player before free agency.
    • The player must sign with another team before a set deadline (usually in April).
    • Players signed for the veteran minimum usually do not count toward the formula.
  2. The Compensatory Formula
    • The NFL uses a confidential formula that considers a player’s salary, playing time, and postseason awards.
    • Higher-paid and more impactful lost free agents result in better compensatory picks.
    • The formula determines whether a team gains or loses more compensatory free agents.
  3. Pick Assignment
    • If a team loses more CFAs than they sign, they receive a compensatory pick (or multiple).
    • The round of the pick is based on the player’s value.
    • Picks are awarded at the end of Rounds 3-7.
    • A team can receive up to four compensatory picks per draft.

Right now, the Eagles were awarded three comp picks for next season, meaning they’re eligible to receive one more if the circumstances call for it. For example, if Mekhi Becton leaves, they’ll likely receive another fourth-round comp pick in 2026.
