Wild: Eagles trade CJ Gardner-Johnson to Texans
Howie Roseman is at it again. For the second day in a row, the Eagles’ GM has pulled the trigger on a trade, but this is a stunner.
Eagles trade CJ Gardner-Johnson for OG Kenyon Green and a 5th Round Pick in 2026
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, here are the full terms of the deal:
Eagles Receive:
- OG Kenyon Green
- 2026 fifth-round pick
Texans Receive:
- S CJ Gardner-Johnson
- 2026 sixth-round pick
Immediate Reaction: WAIT…WHAT?!
After just one season back in Philly, CJ Gardner-Johnson is out the door again. The Eagles initially let him walk to Detroit, only to bring him back last offseason on a three-year, $24 million deal. Now, they’re shipping him to Houston for an underwhelming return.
There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s get into it.
Why Did the Eagles Move On from CJ Gardner-Johnson (Again)?
CJ Gardner-Johnson has always been a polarizing player. He’s talented, brings energy, and can make big plays. But there’s a reason he’s now on his fourth team in five years (Saints → Eagles → Lions → Eagles → Texans).
- The Money Situation
- This move doesn’t clear much cap space ($211,000) but does create $4.7M in dead money. The Eagles could have extended him, but with Reed Blankenship also due for a new deal, maybe they felt they could only keep one.
- Locker Room Fit?
- CJGJ’s on-field swagger is fun as hell to watch, but off the field? It’s clear that teams keep deciding they can live without him. Whether it’s his personality, playstyle, or contract demands, this isn’t the first time a team has moved on quickly.
- The Eagles Need a New Starting Safety
- With CJGJ gone, Sydney Brown now becomes the favorite to start next to Blankenship. But the Eagles definitely need to add more depth, either through free agency or the draft.
Kenyon Green: A Stoutland University Product or a Bust?
Look, Kenyon Green was a first-round pick in 2022 (No. 15 overall), so there’s at least some upside here. The problem? He’s been bad. Really bad.
- 2022 (Rookie Year): Ranked 83rd out of 84 guards (PFF)
- 2023: Missed entire season with a shoulder injury
- 2024: Ranked 78th out of 79 guards (PFF)
That is a nightmare track record for an offensive lineman. However, if there’s one guy who can fix him, it’s Jeff Stoutland. Maybe Green is just another Stoutland U reclamation project, but if he flops, this trade looks even worse.
Also, Green has primarily played left guard in Houston, but the Eagles are likely looking to plug him in at right guard, where Tyler Steen is currently penciled in as the starter. With Mekhi Becton unlikely to return, Green at least gives the Eagles another option.
Final Thoughts: Hard to Love This Deal
There’s no way around it—this feels like a downgrade. Losing CJ Gardner-Johnson for an underperforming lineman and a fifth-round pick two years from now is a tough pill to swallow.
If Kenyon Green magically turns into a solid starting guard, maybe this trade doesn’t look so bad. But as it stands? The Eagles just shipped out one of their most exciting defensive playmakers for a lottery ticket.
At this point, Howie better have a Plan B for the safety position, because right now? It’s Reed Blankenship and a whole lot of question marks.
