Marcus Morris talking about Daryl Morey

Marcus Morris rips Daryl Morey a new one over AI comments, general incompetence

Marcus Morris uncorked on 76ers GM Daryl Morey on the Kevin O’Connor Show when asked about his comments about the use of AI in front-office decision-making. The former Sixer and Philadelphian stated he doesn’t trust Morey’s way of doing business and came with receipts for exactly why.

Marcus Morris knocked Daryl Morey down several pegs with a passionate but well-measured rant:

Morris’ comments were incredibly well put and span several minutes, but if you can’t watch the whole thing, this excerpt sums it up pretty succinctly.

“I don’t trust Daryl Morey. I just don’t trust him. I think he’s just thinking too far ahead of the way basketball needs to be played. He’s trying to do a whole new team,” said Morris. “He’s trying to bring guys in, and he’s flipping them in and out. Does he even understand the dynamic of being in Philadelphia, what guys you need to play in Philadelphia? Understand how the team needs to gel first before talking about A.I.”

You can read more about Morey’s AI comments here. I haven’t and won’t because I can’t fathom how stupid it is.

I’ve watched this several times, and I can’t find a single thing that I disagree with. I was initially excited when Morey joined the organization, but since his first year in 2020, much of the city has soured on him due to questionable moves and lack of concrete results.

I don’t blame Morris for distrusting Morey. I mean, he’s the only NBA GM that James Harden has called a liar in front of an audience of Chinese children at a basketball camp. That alone is quite the distinction.

But dammit, he’s right. Continuity is incredibly important in the NBA. Every year it seems like the core of Embiid and Maxey is surrounded by a totally different supporting cast.

You can’t build on the previous season by tearing down half the roster. This isn’t fantasy basketball; the stats don’t exist in a vacuum. These guys have to play together – in Philadelphia no less – night in and night out.

Is there a bit of a personal vendetta there because Morey traded him? Sure, I’ll give you that. But that doesn’t devalue anything else said in the clip.

You don’t need AI to tell you that Paul George was washed up beyond belief. You could’ve asked me, my dad, or the guy who called me an inaccurate racial slur on the El because I waved his cigarette smoke out of my face. We all would have told you that signing him was a mistake.

I do think this season could be the beginning of the end for Morey in Philadelphia. Now if only we could fire Josh Harris too…
