Opening Day MLB 2025

Opening Day 2025 was a great reminder to the sports world that baseball is KING

Opening Day is supposed to be about optimism, hot dogs, and maybe watching your team win before everything spirals into a six-month existential crisis. Yesterday, Major League Baseball delivered on all cylinders with walk-offs, historic home runs, and comeback victories.

Like clockwork, Tyler O’Neill hit his MLB-record sixth straight Opening Day home run.

New team, same result. Tyler O’Neill wasted zero time in his Orioles debut, blasting a three-run homer and making Opening Day history with his sixth straight season opener with a bomb. That’s not a hot streak — that’s a psychological thriller for pitchers.

Austin Wells Leads Off Like a Maniac

Yankees fans didn’t even know if Austin Wells was going to be the starting catcher, let alone bat leadoff and make history. Not only did he become the first catcher in franchise history to hit leadoff on Opening Day, but he mashed a home run in his first at-bat of the season.

In one swing, Wells became:

  • The first Yankees player ever to hit a leadoff homer on Opening Day.
  • The first catcher in MLB history to do it.

I mean, sure, it’s probably not a long-term solution — but if you’re going to go full chaos mode to open the season, you might as well lean all the way in.

Baltimore Goes Full Metal Jacket

The Orioles launched six home runs in a 12-2 blowout over the Blue Jays. Adley Rutschman and Cedric Mullins each hit two. This team doesn’t just hit — they hunt. And they’ve now scored 10+ runs on Opening Day for three straight years. Only two other teams in MLB history have done that.

This is no longer a “plucky young team.” These dudes are terrifying.

MacKenzie Gore Channels Bob Gibson

Gore had the Phillies looking like they forgot spring training existed. The Nats lefty struck out 13 batters with zero walks in six one-hit innings. Only one other pitcher in baseball history has done that on Opening Day: Bob Gibson. And yet, Washington still managed to blow the lead.

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber go yard, Bohm and Realmuto clutch up in extras, Phillies rally late to beat Nationals 7–3 in extras

About the Phillies…

Philadelphia trailed most of the afternoon and looked dead in the water for six innings. Then Bryce Harper stepped up to the plate, got booed (of course) by the Nationals fans, and promptly launched a game-tying homer to center.

Then Kyle Schwarber went deep. Then Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto delivered the finishing blows in extra innings with a five-run 10th to win 7-3. Wheeler was electric. The bullpen was dicey.

After six innings of the same old shit from the Phillies, the offense finally showed up later in the game but the real concern is who should be leading off.

Thomson went with Turner, and it… was fine but not because of Turner himself. Schwarber’s power feels wasted in that leadoff spot sometimes and yesterday, he gave us a glimpse at his production in the cleanup spot. Turner went 0-4 in the leadoff.

Elsewhere in the Madness:

  • Wilyer Abreu walked it off with a nuke for the Red Sox and casually dropped a 3-for-3, 2-HR, 4-RBI line. Sneaky breakout candidate?
  • Miguel Amaya, the Cubs’ nine-hole catcher, had 5 RBIs. That’s a stat you’ll forget happened in two weeks, but will absolutely win someone a fantasy matchup.
  • Spencer Torkelson walked four times and hit a 423-foot nuke. He’s the first player in MLB history with four walks and a homer on Opening Day.
  • Juan Soto vs. Josh Hader delivered again — this time Hader got the W, striking out Soto to end it. Round 87 of this beef coming in July, probably.
  • Wilmer Flores hit a game-winner for the Giants on Buster Posey’s birthday in Buster Posey’s first game as team president. Of course he did. That’s baseball voodoo.

Quick Hits:

  • The Dodgers are 3-0 and already look like a team sent from the future to destroy us.
  • Seattle rallied late with two bombs after being shut out through six. The A’s bullpen remains a historical reenactment of a disaster.
  • The Marlins finally got their first Opening Day walk-off. That leaves the Padres as the only team still waiting. (Tough scene.)

Final Thought:

Baseball never fails to deliver on Opening Day. It’s weird, it’s emotional, and it’s already leaving us with “What the hell just happened?” box scores. We’ve got 161 more of these. Buckle up.
