Rumor: Eagles could be featured on Hard Knocks this year with new rules on which teams can be chosen

They’re saying the Philadelphia Eagles are a prime candidate to be featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks this year.

And with that, the general consensus is — no thanks.

For years, NFL teams coming off deep playoff runs—especially a Super Bowl appearance—could count on being exempt from the summer spotlight of HBO’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp. But that’s no longer the case. The NFL has officially loosened its rules on which teams can be required to participate, removing the previous exemption that protected teams who made the playoffs in either of the last two seasons.

Now, only three categories of teams are off-limits: those with a first-year head coach, those being featured in the current season’s in-season edition (which now covers an entire division), and teams that have already appeared on the training camp version of Hard Knocks in the past eight years.

This change opens the door for the Eagles—once untouchable thanks to their consistent postseason presence and recent Super Bowl win—to potentially be selected for the show. With the playoff exemption eliminated and the Eagles not falling into any of the three protected categories, the team is officially fair game for HBO’s cameras.

It would mark a major shift, bringing one of the NFL’s most passionate fan bases and a star-studded roster into the training camp spotlight for the first time in franchise history.

Would it be great television? Probably. And at the end of the day, that’s all anyone in this industry cares about sadly. I don’t really care either way. I think the team has strong enough leadership that the spotlight wouldn’t faze them or get in the way of their push for a repeat.
