Julio Jones Retires: Falcons legend hangs it up after 13 electrifying seasons
One of the most dominant wide receivers of his generation — and arguably of all time — is officially calling it a career. Julio Jones, the longtime Atlanta Falcons superstar, announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday via a video posted to the Squad app, calling the journey “an amazing ride.”
And what a ride it was.

Julio Jones was the Definition of a WR1
From the moment he was selected No. 6 overall by the Falcons in the 2011 NFL Draft, Julio Jones redefined what it meant to be a complete wide receiver. Size? 6’3”, 220 pounds of pure muscle. Speed? Clocked a 4.34 40 at the combine. Hands? Glue. Routes? Clean. Physicality? Just ask any poor DB who tried pressing him at the line.

Jones’ prime was outrageous. He posted six straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2014 to 2019, led the league in receiving twice, and still holds the third-most receiving yards in a single season (1,871 in 2015) — a number only surpassed by Calvin Johnson and Cooper Kupp.
Julio Jones’ career numbers speak volumes:
- 7× Pro Bowler
- 5× All-Pro selection
- 13,629 career receiving yards
- 63 touchdowns
- #17 all-time in receiving yards
What’s more impressive is how often Julio Jones did it through double coverage, bracket coverage, and playing through nagging injuries. He wasn’t just great — he was consistently great.
Let’s not forget his jaw-dropping sideline catch in Super Bowl LI, which should’ve gone down as one of the greatest plays in a championship win… until the Falcons turned a 28-3 lead into the stuff of infamy. That game still haunts Atlanta, but Julio’s play never has.

The Post-Falcons Years
After a decade in Atlanta, Julio Jones was traded to Tennessee in 2021 in a cap-saving move. Unfortunately, the dominance never returned. Injuries piled up, and he bounced through short stints with the Buccaneers and Eagles. His final NFL snap came in late 2023 with Philly, where a concussion ended his campaign.
Still, no one will remember Julio for those final chapters. They’ll remember him high-pointing balls over defenders, breaking away from corners with ease, and dragging defenders for YAC like it was nothing.
What Comes Next?
With nearly $150 million in career earnings and a resume that guarantees Canton will be calling, Julio walks away from football with nothing left to prove.
Expect his Hall of Fame bust to be ready and waiting in 2029.
Julio Jones didn’t just play wide receiver — he was the wide receiver. If you were building one in a lab, it looked a lot like No. 11 in a Falcons jersey.
Congrats on a legendary career, Julio Jones. Football won’t forget you.
