Sixers Are Doomed: Daryl Morey assures fans he and Nick Nurse will return as they attempt to ‘run it back’ once again

Here we go again. The Sixers season ends in flames, Daryl Morey steps up to the podium, and we’re spoon-fed the same tired promises wrapped in a new coat of “we’ll assess everything.” Forgive me if I’ve heard this one before.

They just wrapped up a disgraceful 24-58 season — their worst record in nearly a decade — and yet somehow, the message from leadership is optimism. Morey sat beside Nick Nurse like two guys who just stumbled out of a car crash, reassuring everyone that they know how to fix the engine. Spoiler: they don’t.

Morey said they’re going to “assess everything.” Cool. Maybe start by assessing how many times this front office can run the same broken strategy and expect a different result. They’ve built teams around an injury-prone Joel Embiid for years now, and the entire operation collapses the second his knees do. Shocking. Who could’ve predicted that the guy who’s missed significant time every season would… miss more significant time?

This isn’t bad luck. This is a failure of imagination. They bet the house on Embiid and doubled down with Paul George — another guy who treats the injury report like a punch card. And then they acted stunned when it all fell apart.

Morey admitted the team was too old, too hurt, and too thin to survive the grind of an 82-game season. So naturally, his plan is to build around the same guys again — just sprinkle in some younger role players and pray. The franchise is basically trying to microwave leftovers for the fifth night in a row and expecting it to taste like a fresh steak dinner.

Oh, and we’re supposed to get excited about the fifth overall draft pick. Never mind that it only fell into their lap because the team lost 31 of its last 36 games, and they’re still not guaranteed to even get the pick. Morey says they’ll draft the “best player available.” Great. Let’s hope that player can keep Embiid’s knees from disintegrating by February.

Same coach, same GM, same delusion

Morey and Nurse are both coming back. That’s the plan. And that’s the problem. Morey talks about “every waking hour” spent trying to fix this mess, but all it amounts to is another round of duct tape on a foundation that’s already cracked. Maybe it’s time someone in the building starts using those waking hours to admit the current era of The Process is dead.

The truth? The Sixers are stuck in a purgatory of their own creation. They’re a franchise obsessed with what could be instead of accepting what is. And what is — right now — is a team built around brittle stars, run by a front office afraid to blow it up, and coached by a guy who never once had a fully functioning roster but somehow still gets a pass.

So yes, the Sixers are doomed. Not because of injuries, or draft picks, or the basketball gods. They’re doomed because they refuse to try anything different. And until that changes, they’ll keep chasing a championship that only exists in the warped reality of their post-season press conferences.
