Audacy Deep State: Did WIP and WEEI coordinate a fake AJ Brown trade story?

Time to put your tin foil hats on, gang. We’re going to dive into the Audacy Deep State and how they may or may not have made up a story about AJ Brown possibly getting traded to New England for clicks.

Earlier this week, WEEI, a sports station in Boston, reported that a “reliable source” confirmed the Eagles are seriously considering trading AJ Brown to the Patriots for the fourth overall selection to take Penn State’s Abdul Carter.

This “report” threw both fanbases into a frenzy.

On the surface, this trade sounds plausible. AJ Brown to the Patriots has been a rumor for years, and Abdul Carter is a diehard Eagles fan who’s said multiple times he’d love to play for his hometown team.

But spend five minutes looking into the logistics, and you’ll see it’s just not possible. Trading AJ Brown would hit the Eagles with a $90 million dead cap charge this year — putting them well into the red. That alone kills any chance of this trade happening.

Still, 94WIP ran with it. They spent the entire day discussing it like it was real, threw up Twitter polls, and even doubled down when people called them out for it.

Take a step back and consider this: both WIP and WEEI are owned by Audacy. Is it really that far-fetched to think this was a coordinated stunt to boost engagement across their stations? I don’t think so.

It took me all of 10 minutes to gather the info needed to make this claim. Meanwhile, Audacy seems to think their listeners are too dumb to figure out what’s actually happening.

Any time there’s a “report” that sounds completely made up, it probably is. You can say just about anything under the guise of a sourced tip and face zero consequences. That’s the sad reality of sports media right now — especially local outlets, which are dying faster by the year.

What blows my mind is how simple the solution is. People just want real sports talk. Facts. Logical possibilities. Not made-up garbage designed to game the algorithm. And yet, every media figure shrugs and admits they play into it, like the algorithm is some unstoppable force. But if everyone just started speaking logically? That would become the algorithm. It’s really not that complicated.

I don’t have any inside source confirming Audacy is pulling strings behind the scenes like I’ve laid out here. I’m just connecting the dots based on the facts in front of me. Whether or not you want to believe what your eyes are telling you — that’s up to you.
