Injury Update: Cristopher Sánchez Feels ‘Normal’ Day After Forearm Scare

In a rare win for Phillies injury updates, Cristopher Sánchez showed up to the ballpark Wednesday feeling normal. Yes, normal. That’s about as good as it gets the morning after a left forearm scare that cut his start short against the Mets.

“He actually wanted to play catch today,” Rob Thomson said before Wednesday’s game. “But the last I heard, they just want him to rest today and that gives him tomorrow with the day off, and then we start up again Friday.”

Ranger Suárez looks ready to rejoin the Phillies Rotation after breezy Triple-A Rehab start

Cristopher Sánchez’s next turn in the rotation comes up Tuesday at home vs. the Nationals — but don’t be shocked if that gets delayed. His velocity and command were off from the jump Tuesday, and JT Realmuto could tell something wasn’t right even during warmups.

Sánchez powered through two innings on 58 pitches before finally admitting to Thomson that the tightness wasn’t going away. He was pulled immediately.

Thanks to off-days on Thursday and Monday, the Phillies have built-in flexibility to “fiddle with the rotation,” as Thomson put it. Zack Wheeler could go Tuesday on five days’ rest, and the team can shuffle Luzardo, Walker, and Nola accordingly.

Then there’s Ranger Suárez, quietly rehabbing in Triple-A and throwing darts. He breezed through five shutout innings Tuesday night on just 59 pitches and is set for one more tune-up start Sunday in the 80-pitch range. He could rejoin the big-league club by next weekend — and that opens the door to play things extra safe with Sánchez.

It’s not a guarantee, but things are trending the right way. No MRI (yet), no shutdown (yet), and at least one arm (Suárez) on the mend if they need it.

We’ll find out more when Cristopher Sánchez plays catch Friday in Chicago. Until then, the Phillies — and their overworked bullpen — will be holding their breath.
