Eagles select Texas S Andrew Mukuba at No. 64 overall
The Philadelphia Eagles are filling a recent vacancy in the defensive backfield by selecting Texas safety Andrew Mukuba at No. 64 overall.
Andrew Mukuba could shape up to be CJ Gardner-Johnson’s replacement soon, with Vic Fangio and his staff developing him:

Andrew Mukuba is a rangy, instinctive safety with strong coverage skills and the versatility to play multiple roles in the secondary. After transferring from Clemson to Texas, he delivered his best season yet, standing out as both a playmaker and a steady presence on the back end of the defense.
He excels in coverage, showing the ability to handle man-to-man responsibilities in the slot as well as zone assignments deep. His awareness and ability to read the quarterback give him an edge, and he rarely gives up big plays. Mukuba’s fluid movement and quick reactions make him well-suited for today’s pass-heavy NFL.
While he’s aggressive and willing in run support, his lighter frame can lead to some inconsistency as a tackler. Bigger backs and physical receivers can give him trouble at times, especially when he has to bring them down one-on-one. He also occasionally struggles when pressed into physical coverage situations near the line of scrimmage.
Still, Mukuba’s versatility, coverage instincts, and football IQ make him a valuable addition to any secondary. The Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, likely envisioning him as a key piece in a modern, flexible defensive scheme. If he adds strength and improves his tackling consistency, he has starter-level upside with room to grow.
I don’t really like draft grades unless they fit my narrative, but with both draft picks so far being rated highly by pretty much everyone, I’d be lying if I said I don’t feel great about this draft. It could easily shape up to be another Howie Roseman masterclass.
