Howie Roseman Media Reactions Fleece NFL Draft

Media reactions after Howie Roseman fleeces the NFL by landing Jihaad Campbell 31st overall in the NFL Draft

Not even Howie Roseman could believe it — Jihaad Campbell sitting there at pick No. 31, practically gift-wrapped for the Eagles.

The Eagles’ GM spent part of the night trying to trade up with the Chargers and a few other teams to grab Campbell earlier. When that didn’t happen, it looked like the dream was slipping away.

Instead, the draft board broke just right, and Philly landed one of the highest-rated players on their board without moving an inch.

“This was a top-10 player on our board,” Roseman said after the pick. “Really excited to have him. Wasn’t something we anticipated. For us, this was a real easy pick. He can play inside, he can be an edge rusher.”

It’s crazy because Campbell wasn’t even one of the Eagles’ official Top-30 pre-draft visits. But Roseman and Nick Sirianni said earlier this spring that visits are more about filling in gaps — and with Campbell, they already had the full picture.

“We do not have any long-term concerns about his health,” Roseman said. “This wasn’t a need pick. This was a player we had tremendous passion about.”

And the Eagles made sure they didn’t let him slip away once he got within striking distance.

“Very excited to get him and we didn’t want to lose him,” Roseman added.

Somehow, someway, Campbell still fell into Philly’s lap at 31 — and when the clock hit zero, Roseman didn’t even hesitate. You can watch the moment here, with Howie and Jeffrey Lurie looking like two guys who just won the lottery.

Campbell fits exactly what Philly needed without having to force it — a versatile, dynamic linebacker who can fly around in Vic Fangio’s system. He can line up inside, rush off the edge, and make plays all over the field. He’s a total Fangio-type chess piece.

For a team that didn’t exactly spend the offseason hunting for linebackers, the fact that Campbell was available at 31 feels like Howie pulling another rabbit out of his hat. Again.

Once again, Howie Roseman pulls a rabbit out of the hat. Somehow the rest of the NFL let him get away with it and the reactions from the “national media” were priceless.
