Eagles listed as ‘best fit’ for former Cowboys star wide receiver

With the NFL Draft behind us and the Eagles starting their rookie minicamp on Friday, we’re officially in the boring part of the NFL offseason. For all intents and purposes, the offseason is over — but as we know, Howie Roseman is always cooking up behind the scenes.

There are still a handful of notable free agents looking for a new home. Among them, former Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper. Per NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, the Eagles may be the best fit for the former Cowboy.

Why Amari Cooper could be a great fit for Eagles

“Howie Roseman deserves the ‘Dynasty Patriots Treatment,’ wherein every available free agent or trade target is linked to his Eagles,” Patra writes. “The two-time Super Bowl-winning GM isn’t shy about adding veteran depth — see Julio Jones, 2023 — and Philly’s drop-off behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith is steep.

Jahan Dotson, the team’s WR3, put up 216 yards last season. Behind that trio sits 2024 sixth-rounder Johnny Wilson and another reclamation project in Terrace Marshall Jr. As they did last year before the Dotson trade, the Eagles could let things shake out and see if any youngsters are ready to take on a bigger role. However, adding a veteran could make sense as we near the season. Philly offers Cooper a legit shot at chasing a ring in 2025 that others on this list cannot.

I’ll just start out by saying this — the Eagles have a 0.1% chance of signing Cooper. Not because there’s a bidding war for him, but because Philly simply doesn’t need him.

Patra mentions the ‘steep’ drop off at wideout once you get past AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, pointing to Jahan Dotson’s 216 yards during the regular season last year. Stats are kind of useless when talking about the talent the Eagles have at wideout. They ran the ball more than any other team in the NFL last season, of course their passing/receiving stats are going to be below expectation.

Dotson is a fine WR3 and proved it during the postseason. And I’m fine with Johnny Wilson and Terrace Marshall filling out the depth chart. Where does Cooper even fit into that equation, and will he even get significant targets? I doubt it.

The Eagles are a run-first offense and based on the fact that they’re fresh off a Super Bowl victory, I don’t envision that changing next season. I get that the Eagles are always connected to every free agent, but this one just doesn’t make much sense.
