Truist Championship: Where things stand at the Philadelphia Cricket Club heading into the weekend
Truist Championship: A shit show at the fuck factory.
The vibes are schizophrenic on the grounds at Philadelphia Cricket Club for the Truist memorial classic Championship series invitational. While everyone is very busy being pissed off and cold and doing their best to decide whether or not they give a shit about this thing- a sneaky good golf tournament is happening.
On Friday, the historic Wissahickon course was plagued by rain, cold, all while the the looming thought of the PGA Championship in Charlotte next week left many fans wondering whether they’re here for a true Signature Event or just a glorified warm-up.
Yet, despite the gusts, downpours, and general “what town are we in?” vibe, the golf has quietly been first rate.
The weather impact can’t be overstated. On Friday, it never rained for longer than 30 minutes before stopping and then starting again for even longer the next time; every switch getting colder and colder which was annoying for everyone walking the sacred grounds in Flourtown.
It was a masterclass in weather whiplash. Thirty minutes of steady rain, then a break, then more rain so cold it felt like autumn in Minnesota. Fans huddled under tents, scanned the sky for breaks, and cursed every soggy step across the immaculate fairways.
Preferred lies and no cut only added to the surreal feeling. Still, the course held up, and the players adapted—switching between driver and mid-irons as the dampened grass dictated.
Everything is pristine and stunning, and then fuck- its 48 and raining sideways and this sucks now. There is a general confusion running through the property.
Again, this is a certified Signature Event on the PGA TOUR but I spent the majority of the day wondering how much attention is already focused on the how much of everyone’s attention is focused on the PGA Championship next week.
No cut, preferred lies, TIO on a small property. Hole 18 is actually 11. #11 is really #15. 15 is 10 i think? Also for reasons that remain unclear to me at the moment no one knows what town we are in.
The historical significance of the venue is certainly not being ignored, nor is it allowed to be for longer than a few seconds but it’s also not well traveled, so we don’t know what to expect from this limited field of 72.
Everyone was so excited to be arriving at such a cool, old golf course until Rory wasted the good surprise and said they’re just going to gut it with driver. An untold number of people were truly bummed about that.
Weather turns and so does Wissahickon: Rory McIlroy and Philly Cricket Club up the stakes on Friday
However…
Despite the cacophony of strangeness that maybe is always looming over this city, competitive golf is being waged and the gang’s all here.
Outside of the top three at 12, 11 and 10 under par is a massive logjam between 7 and 4 under. Shane, Rory, JT, and Cantlay are playing well as predicted. Collin Morikawa with his new babe on the bag is -7, T4.
American hero Ricky Fowler scratched out a 71 through some brutal conditions today but still sits at -6, T10 entering the weekend. Gary Woodland (excellent), Max Homa, Xander, super hottie Ludvig, Keegan are all around the hoop for the weekend.
Truist Championship Round 2 Recap: Mitchell Holds the Lead, Rory Lurks, Lowry Closes the Gap
Normally an 8-shot deficit on Friday night would place you out of realistic consideration to win the tournament but these circumstances are not normal.
The complexion and personality of the course is going to change again with the weather overnight for at least a third time this week- sunny and warm and somewhat dry for Saturday and Sunday; Shane Lowry (-11) in second is a lauded rain dawg who made his bones in the wet today but that might look different over the next two days, and the current player atop the leaderboard Keith Mitchell (-12) suffers from a nasty habit of not finishing these performances with wins, so leave no doubt that it will be fun to see what happens.
It will be fun to see who still looks like they want to be there after tomorrow...
Shout out Tommy Fleetwood.
Favorite shot of the day: #7, par 4, 437 yds; second shot, left rough/ first cut kind of hanging between both lies on a downhill lie. Very shitty break in the middle of a slow tailspin of shitty breaks that have followed him around the property since Thursday. 133 yds to the pin. Center of the green pin high with a full step through finish.
Prior to this shot I questioned if Tommy Fleetwood was going to make it through his second round he looked so god damn sad. He seemed brimming with confidence during the practice rounds but then got so down and moody and dead Irish Poet face and can’t catch one. But shot of the day to him for getting a grip and pulling himself together to make that shot.
Tommy enters the weekend -4, T25.
Saturday at the Truist Championship Looks Much Better.
