Eagles Carson Wentz

Eagles former first-round pick is still looking for a new home

Remember when Carson Wentz was supposed to be the guy? The Eagles drafted him second overall in 2016, he looked like the future of the franchise, and by 2017, he was the front-runner for league MVP. Fast forward to 2025 and the man is still unsigned in mid-May, clinging to mentions on Bleacher Report’s “available QBs” list while the rest of the NFL focuses on schedule leaks and summer break.

How the mighty have fallen.

But let’s not act like Eagles fans didn’t see this coming from a mile away. Wentz’s career didn’t just derail — it unraveled in slow motion, starting with that torn ACL that opened the door for Nick Foles’ Super Bowl run. After that, everything changed. The confidence. The locker room. The production. Gone.

Sure, he had a few decent stretches with the Colts and even a random 27-touchdown season. But everywhere he’s been, it’s ended the same: fractured locker rooms, poor decision-making, and teams practically sprinting to move on. Indy couldn’t get him out the door fast enough. Washington benched him for Taylor Heinicke. Now he’s 32, out of work, and waiting for Aaron Rodgers to maybe retire so the phone rings. That’s where we’re at.

Eagles Fans Always Knew Wentz Wasn’t Built for the Long Haul

It’s easy for national outlets to talk about his “strong arm” and “mobility,” but those of us in Philly watched every throw. We watched the hero ball plays that turned into backbreaking interceptions. We watched the body language. We watched a guy who was never quite the same after being so close to being the MVP and never quite mentally recovered from not being the one to lift the Lombardi.

And look — this isn’t just a hit piece. Wentz has talent. Always did. But this league doesn’t wait for you to figure it out for 8 seasons. The fact that he was backing up both Matthew Stafford and Patrick Mahomes the last two years and still couldn’t generate enough buzz to land a deal this offseason tells you everything you need to know. Even as a backup, teams are hesitant. That says a lot.

Final Thought: Wentz’s Career Is a Reminder of How Fast Things Change

It’s wild to think about where Wentz was in 2017 — a potential MVP and the face of the Eagles — to now, where he’s a potential last-minute camp arm if someone gets hurt. Philly has since built a juggernaut, won another Super Bowl, and has Jalen Hurts firmly entrenched as the franchise QB. Meanwhile, Wentz is floating in free agency, hoping for another chance.

The fall from grace might look dramatic from the outside, but to Eagles fans? This was the natural ending. We’ve seen this story before. We just didn’t think the final chapter would end in May, in silence.
