Rockies security mistakes Phillies player for fan, Zack Wheeler to the rescue

Some teams lose games. The Rockies are losing the plot. Just when it seemed things couldn’t get more embarrassing for an 8-42 ballclub, Rockies security mistook a Philadelphia Phillies player for a fan.

That player was Johan Rojas, who has played over 200 Major League games but still couldn’t get back on the field without assistance from Zack Wheeler.

According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Rojas stepped into the stands pregame to take a phone call. When he tried to return to the field, security at Coors Field wouldn’t let him through. Wheeler had to come over and vouch for him like a parent picking up a kid from detention.

This is how things are going in Colorado.

Rojas entered the game as a pinch runner in the ninth inning. He stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error, and made his presence felt — all after nearly being locked out of the stadium by the home team’s staff.

Divine Intervention: Phillies are 7-0 since a child of God raised a crucifix in the outfield

The Phillies completed the four-game sweep with a 2-0 win and left Colorado having scored runs, robbed hits, and rescued teammates from security. They’re rolling through the National League while the Rockies can’t even identify who belongs on the field.

Brenton Doyle tripled with one out in the second, threatening to give Colorado an early lead. But Suárez shut it down with a groundout and a flyout to keep the game scoreless.

The Phillies went 7-0 against the Rockies this season—the first time in franchise history they’ve swept a season series of at least seven games.

Zack Wheeler (5-1, 2.67 ERA) gets the ball Friday night as the Phillies head to Oakland for a three-game set. Colorado will stay home to host the Yankees, with no starter yet announced.
