Darrell Doucette is making it really hard to root for Flag Football Pioneers at the 2028 Summer Olympics

At first, I wanted to root for Darrell Doucette. I really did. He’s one of the guys who helped lay the foundation for flag football’s rise — grinding through the amateur circuits, pushing for visibility, and helping the sport finally land a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics.

But if he’s going to keep running his mouth like this, then I’m out.

Darrell Doucette, a 5’8”, 140-pound flag football quarterback who once went viral for saying he’s better than Patrick Mahomes (yes, really), is now upset that NFL players might join Team USA for the Olympic Games.

Instead of embracing the potential exposure, attention, and talent the NFL could bring to the sport, he’s taking the “we deserve this more than you” route.

“I think it’s disrespectful that they just automatically assume that they’re able to just join the Olympic team because of the person that they are,” Doucette said. “They didn’t help grow this game to get to the Olympics.”

Okay, but… it’s not the Local Rec League Olympics. It’s the actual Olympics.

The goal isn’t to give out nostalgia medals to the guys who were there first — it’s to win a gold medal. And if DeVonta Smith, Cooper DeJean, Jalen Hurts, or literally anyone in the NFL wants in, you hand them a flag and ask how fast they can get to L.A.

Darrell Doucette is missing the bigger picture.

The Olympics are about elite performance. The U.S. doesn’t field a national track team based on who started running first — they send the fastest people alive. Flag football won’t be any different.

You can admire the grind without confusing loyalty for merit. There are definitely guys in the flag football community who deserve a look. There might even be a few who make the final roster. But acting like they deserve a guaranteed spot over the best football players in the world? That’s a fantasy.

And frankly, the more Doucette doubles down on it, the more the general public is going to turn on him. Instead of celebrating what he helped build, they’re going to remember him as the guy who tried to gatekeep the Olympics from Justin Jefferson and Jalen Ramsey.

Imagine standing on a field at the 2028 Olympics, arms crossed, telling actual NFL superstars that they’re not welcome because they “didn’t help grow the game.” That’s not just misguided — it’s delusional.

If Darrell Doucette wants to be taken seriously as a competitor, fine. Earn your spot. But if he keeps digging in his heels like he’s flag football’s final boss, he’s just going to get steamrolled — and not just by NFL guys.

He’s going to lose the one thing he had going for him: public support.
