‘What’s going to happen?’: Eagles TE Dallas Goedert reflects on emotional offseason
For a time, it seemed Dallas Goedert’s days in midnight green were over.
The Eagles’ tight end spent much of the offseason facing an uncertain future, as contract negotiations stalled and doubts grew about whether the team would keep him on the roster at a cap number exceeding $15 million for 2025.
Goedert, who had no guaranteed money left on his previous deal, was reluctant to return without financial security.
“There were definitely days that were filled with emotion,” Goedert said Wednesday, speaking to the media for the first time since finalizing a restructured contract. “Just kind of sat on the couch and stared at the TV blankly like, ‘What’s going to happen?’”
Those questions were finally answered earlier this month, when the Eagles and Goedert agreed to a revised deal. The new contract includes $10 million in guaranteed money and up to $1 million in incentives. It gives both sides a short-term solution and Goedert a chance to prove his value heading into what could be his final year in Philadelphia.
The agreement came after weeks of internal debate and negotiation. Goedert, who turns 30 this year, remains one of the league’s most efficient tight ends when healthy. However, injuries have been a persistent concern, as he has missed 21 games over the past four seasons, including seven last year.
“There were a lot of emotions that went on through the offseason,” he said. “Not sure if you’re going to be here, not sure if you’re not. There were the sad emotions of leaving. There was the excitement of a change, seeing something different. And it just kind of went back and forth and I just kind of balanced those.
“I’ve been through seven offseasons, and this is the first time I’ve had to deal with it, so I’m pretty lucky. But it was an interesting feeling for sure. I’ve been fortunate to sign a good deal here before. I didn’t want to play for less. I know what I’m worth, and I think the Eagles do too. We were able to land on a number I felt good about.”
A second-round pick in 2018, Goedert has compiled 349 receptions for 4,085 yards and 24 touchdowns in seven seasons. He currently ranks 10th in franchise history in receptions, 13th in receiving yards, and 19th in touchdowns.
If Goedert can stay healthy and have a productive season, he could position himself as one of the top free-agent tight ends next offseason, should the Eagles opt not to re-sign him.
“I’m really excited about this year,” he said. “Obviously, I’d love to play my entire career in Philadelphia, but I’m not too worried about (the future). I’m excited to see what happens this year. Excited to put up a really good year, have a successful year with an incredible team and let my agent handle his job and talks after the season.
He added, “I’m super stoked to be back here. Got a lot of love for a lot of people in this building. Got a lot of love for Philadelphia. So super glad to be back. And we’ve got high expectations and I want to help us get back to where we were last year.”
