Report: Timberwolves ready to make another run at Kevin Durant trade

It sounds like Kevin Durant to Minnesota isn’t just a trade deadline fantasy — the Timberwolves are reportedly ready to make another serious run at him this summer.

According to Ashish Mathur of Hoops Wire, the Wolves are expected to reignite trade talks with the Suns for Kevin Durant, after an earlier attempt at the deadline fell short. Minnesota believes they need one more true “alpha” next to Anthony Edwards to take the final step toward an NBA title — and despite Durant’s rocky playoff track record in Phoenix, they still view him as that missing piece.

It tracks. Edwards is already on record saying Kevin Durant is “my favorite player of all time,” and the two built more chemistry last summer playing together on Team USA. It’s no secret that Minnesota will do whatever it takes to keep Edwards happy — and this is exactly that type of move.

Anthony Edwards says Kevin Durant is his favorite player

KD, even at 36, is still elite — 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 52.7% shooting this past season. He’s also got two rings, two NBA Finals MVPs, and a regular-season MVP under his belt. The Wolves know they’re close. Adding Durant could be what pushes them to the top of the West.

Now, here’s where it gets painful — because rumors have been swirling about our Sixers also targeting Kevin Durant ahead of the NBA Draft.

ESPN believes the Sixers are expected to target Kevin Durant in a trade package on draft night

And obviously, I would much rather see KD in Philadelphia than playing in Minnesota.

But what are the Sixers doing? Who knows. While the Wolves are being aggressive and building around their young superstar, it looks like the Sixers are once again content to let this fanbase suffer. Another offseason of watching potential impact players go elsewhere while Joel Embiid slowly ticks away? Wouldn’t be the least bit surprising at this point.

Durant reportedly holds a no-trade clause but is open to Minnesota. Whether Philly can (or will) make a serious push remains to be seen — but with the draft approaching fast, the clock is ticking.

Minnesota is moving like a team trying to win a title. The Sixers are moving like a team that’s happy to hang another second-round banner.

It’s right there, Sixers. If you want to go for it — really go for it — this is your move. But based on the recent history of this front office, I’m not holding my breath.
