Donte DiVicenzo exposed the New York Knicks locker room “problems” and we all just ignored it
There’s a viral clip making the rounds of former Knicks guard Donte DiVincenzo—now with the Timberwolves—jawing at the Knicks bench during a free throw when the Wolves were taking on the Knicks.
On the surface, it just looks like a little trash talk. But when you actually break down what Donte was saying, it feels more like a public therapy session—one that pulls the curtain back on what might be a deeper issue inside the New York Knicks locker room.
Watch: Did Donte DiVincenzo expose the Knicks problems earlier this season?

“Can’t finish right, Thibs?”
That’s the first line that jumps out. Donte looked dead at the Knicks bench and said it twice. “Can’t finish right?” then again, “Can’t finish right, Thibs?”
Now, unless there’s another bald man wearing a suit over there that Donte had beef with, this was clearly aimed at Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau. Whether he meant finish the play, finish a gameplan, or finish a playoff run, the meaning’s the same—it’s personal.
And while Donte played just one season under Thibs, it wasn’t exactly a disaster. The Knicks made a legit playoff run, albeit with a notoriously short rotation that left half the roster in a body bag by the end of it.
But Donte’s not dumb. He knows where the shots land.
“With Thibs, you trust in whatever his decision is and we were winning. You can’t knock it, we were winning,” DiVincenzo told reporters. “I think you get to the point where, like after the season, I felt that my body felt really good… I know a lot of guys got hurt and everything but me personally afterward, I was like ‘damn, we were one game away.’”
Here’s the most cryptic—and revealing—quote of that video
“That’s what happens when they let you run the show.”
He said it twice. Who was that meant for? Tom Thibodeau? Rick Brunson? Jalen Brunson? If it’s Thibs, he’s saying the team fell apart under his leadership. If it’s Rick Brunson, he’s implying that the assistant coach (and father of the team’s star player) has too much influence.
Either way, it’s clear: Donte thinks someone was allowed to call the shots who shouldn’t have. And it might explain why the Knicks were suddenly eager to break up the so-called “Nova Knicks” and ship DiVincenzo out of town.
Donte then unloaded the dagger.
“Let dad be the coach.”
That is savage. There’s no misinterpreting that. That’s Rick Brunson. That’s Jalen’s dad. That’s the guy who allegedly had to be separated from Donte on the court during a preseason handshake line just a few months ago. You don’t make that comment unless there’s real heat.
This wasn’t just an emotional outburst. There’s a history here. Back in October, Donte and Rick Brunson had to be pulled apart after a preseason game in MSG. This wasn’t playoff intensity. This was October.
“It was words of affirmation,” Jalen Brunson joked afterward, brushing it off.
“My relationship with Jalen, that’s my brother and my best friend,” DiVincenzo said. “That’s a separate relationship… But it is what it is.”
Sure, Donte. But let’s be real—if you’re calling a guy’s dad out on live television, this is what comes with it. Especially when those assholes trade you for a player they ended up scapegoating anyways in Karl-Anthony Towns.
Did DiVincenzo Expose the Knicks’ Culture?
Look, Jalen Brunson is a phenomenal offensive talent. No one’s arguing that. But if you’ve watched the Knicks, you know exactly what Donte’s talking about.
Brunson plays Harden-ball: dribble, dribble, dribble, shot. It’s a lot of iso, a lot of hero-ball, and very little flow.
Even when the Knicks were at their best, it felt like they were one-dimensional. That’s not on Brunson alone—but if his dad is helping run the show behind the scenes?
Well, now it all starts to make sense. Leon Rose fired Thibs to potentially further enable the Jalen Brunson show. That’s my theory. Or maybe Thibs was the problem all along, and that was what Donte was hinting at here.
Either way, Donte exposed the Knicks and we all just ignored it.
