Nintendo Switch 2 launch is a hot mess—Here are the 5 wildest headlines for the casual gamer

I’ll be honest—it’s been a minute since I even thought about picking up a Nintendo console. The last one I really played was the Wii, But lately, something’s shifted. Maybe it’s the nostalgia kicking in, maybe it’s the burnout from the endless flood of remakes and microtransactions in modern gaming—but the idea of purchasing a Nintendo Switch 2 has certainly crossed my mind.

Look, we’re a sports blog—no doubt about it. But that doesn’t mean we can’t branch out every now and then, especially when it comes to something like the new Nintendo Switch 2. At the end of the day, gaming is a hobby just like sports—and let’s be real, Mario Kart gets more competitive than half the men’s leagues out there.

That said, I am currently hesitant to pull the trigger on the Switch 2, due to how absolutely off-the-rails the launch has already become. We’re talking broken features, viral bans, console smashing, drift issues, and packaging that’s so confusing fans are walking out of stores with the wrong system. This isn’t just a console drop—it’s a reality show, and I’m here for every unhinged second of it.

Walmart was giving out Pringles and Coke with the Nintendo Switch 2 (seriously)

Now, full disclosure—I’m not the most dialed-in gamer these days. Most of my time gaming goes towards Call Of Duty Warzone, Madden, and NBA2K. But, I am a legit sports journalist with a degree in journalism, (It’s time to finally put that thing to use) and I’ve taken the liberty to dig into the five wildest, most trending news drops around the Nintendo Switch 2’s chaotic launch.

1. Joystick Drift—It’s STILL a Problem?

Apparently stick drift was a problem on the original Nintendo Switch, and you’d think they learned by now. But unfortunately, the fancy new joy-con’s on the Switch 2 still suffer from that infamous stick-drift. iFixit just shredded it in a teardown, giving it 3/10 repairability and calling out soldered thumbsticks and glued batteries.

Not very encouraging for someone looking to buy this expensive piece of hardware. But, there is this…

2. Obviously the midnight launch had retailers panicking

While everyone is probably clowning the people camping outside of Best Buy, GameStop, or whatever retailer they can to get their hands on this bad boy, I’m going to take a second to celebrate them. Like I said earlier, I’m on a bit of a nostalgic trip right now, and seeing crowds lined up outside of stores takes me back to the glory days of gaming—like when we camped out for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 at GameStop.

And while this isn’t something that should make or break your decision to buy the Switch 2, I just thought it was worth highlighting here.

3. Stunt Gone Wrong: YouTuber BANNED for Smashing His Switch 2

Enter the internet lunacy. PlainRock124 pulled a smash‑to‑shock stunt on launch day, filmed it, posted it—to immediate viral fame. The result? He’s now banned from Nintendo stores, and the clip has over a million views worth of outrage and views

4. Sticker Shock: Nintendo’s Pushing PS5-Level Prices Now

Listen—I’m not shocked the Nintendo Switch 2 comes with a higher price tag. It’s 2025, everything’s more expensive. But it’s clear some fans weren’t ready to drop PS5 money on their favorite family-friendly franchise. The base console is $449.99, and if you want the Mario Kart World bundle? That’ll run you $499.99. Oh, and by the way—Mario Kart World by itself is $79.99. That’s not a deluxe edition. That’s just the game. Full stop.

And then there’s the tariff situation, which is adding a layer of complexity to this launch. With the U.S. re-evaluating trade policies—part of the broader strategy that started under President Trump’s administration—some supply chains and pricing structures have been shifting. It’s already affected pre-order timing for the Switch 2, and it could play a role in how Nintendo handles holiday bundle deals.

That said, these tariffs were always about strengthening U.S. leverage, and if it leads to better long-term competition or manufacturing pivots, it might pay off in the end. Just don’t count on Nintendo giving out Black Friday discounts like candy this year.

5. Hack Already Found — Day 2!

Boot up, hack down? One day after launch, tech guru David Buchanan found a Switch 2 userland exploit—enough to run custom code and chew up Nintendo’s Timelines. Am I surprised by this? Absolutely not. Some people just have way too much time on their hands.

Final Verdict

So, hopefully this blog at least informed you and entertained you in the slightest. And while you may be undecided on buying a Switch 2 like myself; hoping this blog blows up and I can just use those funds to buy one and give you all a legitimate review.

Not some biased review like you see from some of these tech guys or gamers online, when they are sponsored by the company directly.
