Phillies Cubs 8-4 Loss

Phillies continue citywide humiliation ritual with latest 8-4 loss to the Cubs

Make it 10 losses in the last 12 for the Phillies.

Despite a solid enough start from Mick Abel and a brief lead in the fifth inning, the bullpen once again couldn’t hold it. Ian Happ went deep twice for the Cubs—his 16th career multi-homer game—and the Phillies fell 8-4 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Mick Abel wasn’t perfect, but the 23-year-old held his own. He gave up three solo shots. Happ, Dansby Swanson, and Michael Busch all got him—but he navigated traffic well and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth with a nasty check-swing K of Kyle Tucker.

Offensively, there were signs of life early. Max Kepler mashed a two-run homer in the second. Then in the fifth, after chasing Cubs starter Colin Rea, Alec Bohm drove in two with a single off Ryan Brasier to give the Phils a 4-3 lead.

It didn’t last long.

The Taijuan Walker Nightmare continued after he gave up a two-out, two-run blast to Happ in the sixth to flip the game.

Walker took the loss and now owns a 2-5 record. I don’t know how many more appearances I can take from him. It’s time the Phillies eat the rest of his contract and part ways.

Anyways, Chicago kept piling on with three more runs in the eighth as the Phillies’ bullpen again came up small—an all-too-familiar theme during this ugly stretch.

Brandon Marsh, the walk-off hero on Monday, exited in the sixth after aggravating his left elbow. He got tagged there earlier in the game and didn’t look right afterward. The Phillies are already down Bryce Harper and Aaron Nola, and now Marsh might join the injury list.

Marsh can take all the time he needs. The Phillies are in desperate need Bryce Harper however. This lineup simply does not click without him in it.

Oh great, the Lizard King is back tomorrow

To make matters worse, Jesús Luzardo (5-2, 4.46 ERA) gets the ball Wednesday against Cubs righty Ben Brown (3-4, 5.37 ERA).

Luzardo got rocked in his last two outings. If things go the same way tomorrow and the Phillies lose another series, this time at home, this fan base will lose their damn minds.

The Phillies are 1-10 in their last 11 games and look completely out of sync. Injuries, bullpen meltdowns, and inconsistent bats have derailed what was once the best team in the National League.

Something’s gotta change. Fast.
