Nick Castellanos streak

Nick Castellanos benched in Miami after “inappropriate” comment to Rob Thomson, start streak snapped at 236 Games

Welp. So much for the ironman streak. According to reports, Nick Castellanos, who had started 236 straight games, the second-longest active streak in Major League Baseball and the longest by a Phillies player since Pete Rose, won’t be in the lineup tonight.

Rob Thomson told reporters (and Charlotte Varnes down in Miami) that Nick Castellanos is being benched because of something he said when Rob pulled him for a defensive replacement in the eighth inning of Monday’s win over the Marlins.

Trea Turner sets the tone, Mick Abel shoves, Phillies win fifth straight in Miami

Tough break. Goodbye ironman streak. All because Topper thought whatever was said by Nick Castellanos was “inappropriate.”

That’s all we got, but it doesn’t take a forensic linguist to piece together what probably happened here. Casty didn’t want to be pulled for a defensive substitution. The Phillies however, were in complete control last night and won 5-2 so I’m not really sure why Castellanos was upset about it?

Castellanos has played every single game for nearly a season and a half straight. He was chasing down some serious historical territory, especially for a guy who takes a ton of flak from fans.

To say this is unprecedented under Rob Thomson is an understatement.

He’s known as a players’ manager. Keeps the clubhouse calm. Keeps guys in the lineup through slumps. So if Rob is sitting Castellanos for something he said, you know it had to cross a line.

Topper wouldn’t pull this move lightly, especially not during a five-game winning streak with a suddenly red-hot team clawing its way back up the NL East standings.

Bryce Harper is still out. Bryson Stott just dinged his elbow. Otto Kemp is out here hitting .350. It’s a clubhouse with real vibes right now and maybe Rob’s just protecting that by not letting one comment derail momentum.

What’s next? That’s the real question.

You don’t bench a veteran with this kind of streak for just one game unless the slate gets wiped clean behind the scenes. If there’s tension, then we’re talking about a much bigger issue in the clubhouse. I don’t think that’ll be the case with Nick Castellanos but I guess we’ll have to see how this plays out moving forward.

Castellanos will be watching from the dugout tonight. His streak snapped at 236. The only question now is what happens tomorrow.
