Club World Cup Morocco The Linc

Moroccan fans lit The Linc up like it was the Casablanca Derby during the Club World Cup over the weekend

Wydad AC may have gotten washed off the field by Juventus at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, but their fans stole the spotlight

In the 26th minute, the Club World Cup match had to stop because Moroccan supporters lit so many flares the entire lower bowl looked like a warehouse fire.

Honestly, I have no idea how anyone was even allowed to bring flares or smoke bombs through the gates.

FIFA will probably think twice about hosting another match in a major American city where fans are legally allowed to buy fireworks in bulk off the side of the road.

Obviously, they are explosive devices and flammable, but I guess they aren’t trigged by metal detectors?

Drink prices at Lincoln Financial Field will have you drunk with rage before even taking a sip of alcohol

Either way, the scene was wild. It was full-blown civil unrest with vuvuzelas and I personally haven’t seen that much smoke since the Philadelphia Eagles beat the living hell out of the Washington Commanders during the NFC Championship game.

Props to the Linc security for not losing their minds, because the stadium looked like the set of a disaster movie for a solid 10 minutes. You couldn’t see the pitch. You could barely see the ACME ad looming like the villain in a Looney Tunes episode.

Arguably even more impressive is that Juventus didn’t even seem phased. They casually handled Wydad like it was a training session and kept things moving.

Club World Cup: Looking Ahead at the Linc

We’re just getting started. There are four more Club World Cup games in South Philly, and they’re only getting bigger:

  • Tuesday: Esperance vs. Chelsea. Could be fireworks of the legal variety.
  • Thursday: Real Madrid vs. Salzburg. Cheapest ticket is around $200 and worth every penny just to see Jude Bellingham flex on MLS territory.
  • Next week: Possible matchups like PSG vs. Messi’s Inter Miami or Palmeiras vs. PSG. The winner of that game plays in the quarterfinal at the Linc, possibly against Bayern Munich or Chelsea.

It’s wild that Lincoln Financial Field is suddenly the world’s most explosive soccer venue. Sunday felt less like a match and more like a rebel uprising backed by drums, black smoke, and a faint smell of fried dough.

We’ll see if Chelsea’s supporters can match that energy Tuesday but fair warning, if anyone’s lighting flares in Section 108, wear a mask and bring goggles.
