The Flyers didn’t overthink it. When Porter Martone was still on the board at pick No. 6, they pounced.
NHL Draft: Flyers take winger Porter Martone at No. 6
At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, the Porter Martone checks just about every box this franchise has historically loved—size, edge, and a heavy right-handed shot. He’s a bruising 18-year-old with legitimate top-line upside, and he might’ve been a top-three pick if a few other teams had gone a different direction.
When Nashville grabbed center Brady Martin at No. 5, it opened the door for Martone to fall right into Danny Brière’s lap.
Martone absolutely tore up the OHL this season with 31 goals and 67 assists in 57 games. Then he added another four goals and five helpers in just six playoff appearances.
Porter Malone is physical, creative, and carries himself like a guy who’s going to wear a letter on his jersey someday. He’s already got international leadership experience too, having captained Canada’s U18 squad at Worlds.
Sure, there was a temptation to take James Hagens, the slick center who fills a need. But the Flyers are in “best-player-available” mode right now—and that’s exactly what Martone represents. This pick makes sense. He’s got the kind of skillset and ceiling you bet on in the top 10.
The Flyers had more moves coming, trading up to draft Jack Nesbitt with the No. 12 overall pick >>
