Rumor: Eagles-Steelers trade buzz heats up after Pittsburgh shake up

The Eagles might not be done just yet.

After a quiet stretch this offseason, a fresh round of trade rumors is circling the NovaCare Complex, and this time, it’s a big one. The buzz? All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt could be on the move, and the Eagles are being mentioned as a potential suitor.

This all started when the Steelers pulled off a blockbuster trade on Monday, sending shockwaves through the league. Pittsburgh shipped Minkah Fitzpatrick to Miami in exchange for cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith, adding to a wild offseason that already saw them acquire DK Metcalf and ship George Pickens off to Dallas. That’s not just retooling — that’s a full-blown identity shift.

And now all eyes are on Watt.

Eagles Linked to Watt After Latest Steelers Deal

With contract tensions building between Watt and the Steelers — highlighted by his absence from minicamp — ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that multiple teams have started exploring potential trade packages. For now, Pittsburgh is reportedly unwilling to part ways with their defensive centerpiece. But given the smoke, the fire might not be far behind.

Enter Howie Roseman.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin listed the Eagles as a logical landing spot if Watt becomes available. And honestly, it makes too much sense.

“Philadelphia Eagles,” Benjamin said. “Why should general manager Howie Roseman ever be counted out of big-name sweepstakes? The Eagles spent much of the offseason shedding salary, not collecting it, but we know they prioritize the trenches, and with both Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat exiting their edge group, a proven star like Watt could take a lot of pressure off young starters like Nolan Smith. Can you imagine Watt and Jalen Carter on the same front? It’d cost a pretty penny, but Watt would also get to stay in Pennsylvania to continue his career.”

With Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat no longer part of the edge rotation, this team could use a proven, dominant pass rusher to take pressure off the likes of Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter. Pairing Watt with Carter on the defensive front? That’s a nightmare scenario for opposing quarterbacks, and a dream for Philly fans.

Oh, and let’s not ignore the geography. Watt wouldn’t even have to leave Pennsylvania.

Too Expensive or Too Perfect?

Of course, it wouldn’t be a typical Eagles rumor without a reality check. Financially, this would be a tough squeeze. Watt is likely seeking a new deal, and with all the big contracts already on the books in Philly, it’s unclear how Roseman could make it work. But we’ve learned by now, never count Howie out.

This is the same GM who flipped Carson Wentz for a first-round pick, traded up for Jalen Carter, and landed Saquon Barkley in free agency. If there’s a crack in the door, he’ll kick it open.

Adding T.J. Watt would be the kind of move that turns an already elite Eagles defense into something terrifying. Is it likely? Not really. Is it impossible? Absolutely not. And in Philadelphia, we don’t need probable — we just need hope and a little chaos.

Stay tuned, Birds fans. Something tells me Howie’s not done yet.
