Eagles Bryan Braman

Former Eagles Super Bowl champ is battling heartbreaking cancer diagnosis

The Eagles are coming off their second Super Bowl title in franchise history, but while the city basks in another championship glow, heartbreaking news hit closer to home for fans of that unforgettable 2017 squad.

Bryan Braman — the long-haired wild man flying down the field on special teams — has been diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form of cancer. He’s now in what his agent describes as “the fight of his life.”

Let’s get something straight: Braman wasn’t the guy racking up sacks or making highlight-reel picks. But every Eagles fan who followed that 2017 season remembers how vital special teams were to the team’s identity, and Braman was right in the heart of it. He played like someone with something to prove, because, frankly, he did. Undrafted out of college, made his name in Houston, and earned a ring in Philly.

Super Bowl LII was the last game of Braman’s NFL career. And while he’s been out of the spotlight since then, his diagnosis has brought him right back into the hearts of Eagles Nation.

A GoFundMe campaign launched to help Braman with medical expenses has already cleared $80,000, with support pouring in from former teammates and fans. J.J. Watt even threw in $10,000, a sign of the respect Braman earned throughout his career.

There’s something different about the Eagles and their players. It’s more than just football. Guys like Braman are proof of that. He wasn’t a superstar, but he represented everything this city values: grit, toughness, and a chip on your shoulder big enough to carry you all the way to a parade down Broad Street.

Now, Braman needs that same fight — and he’s got an entire city behind him. If you cheered for him on Sundays in 2017, now’s the time to cheer even louder.

The Eagles open training camp on July 22, looking to run it back and repeat as champions. But as they chase glory on the field, we’ll be rooting just as hard for a different kind of victory off it — Braman’s.

Keep fighting, 56. Philly’s with you.
