Zack Wheeler and Kyle Schwarber are All-Stars, but the real story is who got snubbed
The Phillies are sending two players to Atlanta for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game with Zack Wheeler and Kyle Schwarber both getting selected to the National League roster. While both absolutely earned it, the snubs are glaring.
Zack Wheeler: No-Brainer
Zack Wheeler is in full ace mode right now. He just tossed a one-hit shutout on Sunday, his first complete game since Roy Halladay Day in 2021.
Since coming back from paternity leave on June 9, Wheeler has allowed just three earned runs over 40 innings. He was named NL Pitcher of the Month in June, and there’s a real chance he starts the All-Star Game. That’s how good he’s been.
Kyle Schwarber: Bombs Only
Schwarber will head to his second All-Star Game as a Phillie, and third overall. He’s launched 27 homers and continues to be one of the most feared lefty power bats in the league.
He told reporters after Sunday’s win that he won’t be participating in the Home Run Derby this year and honestly, that’s perfectly fine with me.
The Snubs
Can someone explain how Trea Turner is not an All-Star? This one’s ridiculous.
Turner is slashing .299/.351/.451 with an .802 OPS, 11 home runs, 39 RBIs, and 18 doubles. He leads the National League in hits with 109—10 more than second place. Not only should he be on the All-Star roster, he should be starting. Instead? Nothing.
Cristopher Sánchez has been nails all season. He’s posted a 2.68 ERA and a 7-2 record, with 108 Ks in 100.2 innings. He’s taken the ball every fifth day, shoved consistently, and developed into one of the most reliable starters in the NL. Leaving him off the All-Star roster is a joke.
Ranger Suárez
The ERA is down to 1.99. He had 10 straight quality starts before his short outing Saturday (which was pitch-limited). The only reason he might’ve been passed over is that he’s just under the innings threshold to qualify for leaderboard recognition.
There’s still hope…
There’s a good chance one of Sánchez or Suárez still gets added as a replacement. Pitchers drop out of the game all the time due to rest schedules. If either of them doesn’t get the call in the next week or so, something’s broken with the selection process.
For now, it’s Wheeler and Schwarber heading to Atlanta but Philly deserved more.
A lot more.
