Eagles floated as top landing spot for former No. 1 pick
Despite winning the Super Bowl last season, the Eagles took some serious hits on the defensive side of the ball this offseason — losing Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Isaiah Rodgers.
Now, with training camp approaching and a wide-open NFC picture, Philly is being floated as a prime landing spot for veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Matt Holder of Bleacher Report named the Eagles the best fit for Clowney among all available teams.
“The Eagles’ defense took a lot of hits this offseason, including losing Josh Sweat in free agency,” Holder wrote. “While Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt are expected to take over, in addition to pass-rush specialists Azeez Ojulari and Joshua Uche, it couldn’t hurt to bring in Clowney as an insurance policy.”
Eagles Defense Could Use Another Veteran Presence
Howie Roseman has stayed relatively quiet in late free agency, but that doesn’t mean he’s finished. While the Eagles do have promising young pass rushers in the mix, they’re still thin on proven production. That’s where Clowney comes in.
The 31-year-old is coming off a solid 2024 campaign with the Carolina Panthers, tallying 46 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and four pass deflections in 14 games. While Clowney has never quite lived up to the generational hype he had coming out of college as the No. 1 pick in 2014, he’s still an effective rotational pass rusher — and Philly wouldn’t need him to be a star, just a contributor.
Could the Eagles Actually Make the Move?
It’s unclear if the Eagles have legitimate interest in Clowney, but the idea of adding a high-upside veteran for depth makes sense, especially for a team that’s squarely in “win now” mode. Clowney wouldn’t need to carry the load but could provide valuable reps behind the starters or in situational packages.
At this point, the Eagles have earned the benefit of the doubt. If they think Clowney has gas left in the tank, you trust Howie to make the right call.
Either way, it’s a name to watch as the 2025 season creeps closer. Clowney in midnight green? It’s not as far-fetched as it sounds.
