Second-year Eagles WR says he’s ‘more explosive’ — Could he carve out a real role in 2025?

Eagles wide receiver Ainias Smith didn’t do much last year, but don’t let the stat sheet fool you — he’s not just here to be a camp body.

After a quiet, injury-riddled rookie season, the former Texas A&M standout is entering Year 2 lighter, faster, and apparently more explosive than ever. And if his offseason grind is any indication, Smith could absolutely carve out a sneaky-good role for himself in the Eagles offense or on special teams.

Eagles WR Putting in the Work With A.J. Brown

Smith’s been training with none other than Eagles All-Pro A.J. Brown this offseason, running the steps at the Linc and soaking up every bit of mentorship he can get. Brown talked to him about visualizing goals and manifesting success — which is usually self-help book mumbo jumbo, but when it’s coming from a guy who just dropped 1,000+ yards in a Super Bowl season, it hits a little different.

Smith told Houston’s KPRC2 that he finally had a full, healthy offseason and that he feels “excited, explosive, and lighter” heading into camp. He’s trimmed a few pounds and claims to be moving better — the kind of language you want to hear from a young guy who didn’t have much of a shot to show anything last year.

Eagles Could Use a Spark Behind the Starters

Let’s be honest: the Eagles receiver room is top-heavy. Brown and DeVonta Smith are elite. After that? There’s opportunity. If Ainias Smith can pop in camp and preseason, especially on special teams or as a gadget guy, he might just force the coaches to make room for him.

He flashed a bit in Week 18 when the starters rested — 4 catches, 35 yards, and a touchdown — but the rest of the season was a wash. He spent most of it on PUP and IR. But now, fully healthy, with another year in the system, Smith could become the kind of role player good teams find gold in: hungry, versatile, and coachable.

He’s not just fighting for a spot on the Eagles — he’s fighting for his NFL future.

There are no guarantees for late-round picks, especially in a loaded Eagles roster. But if Ainias Smith’s mindset matches his offseason work, and if he can keep stacking plays in training camp, don’t be shocked if he sneaks onto the 53-man roster — and makes some noise once he’s there.

The Eagles already have the stars. Smith just wants to be the spark.
