Report: Eagles rookie may finally sign his contract and report to camp
For most of the offseason, it looked like the Eagles were headed for a rare contract standoff with their second-round pick, safety Andrew Mukuba. But thanks to some long-overdue movement around the league, that ice might finally be breaking.
Mukuba, drafted 64th overall out of Texas, was the last pick of the second round—and one of the final remaining unsigned rookies in the league. Why? Because the entire second round turned into a contract staring contest after the first two guys off the board — Cleveland’s Carson Schwesinger and wideout Jayden Higgins — landed fully guaranteed deals. That’s unheard of for Day 2 picks, and it spooked the rest of the league into a holding pattern.
But leave it to the 49ers to save the day. San Francisco signed Alfred Collins to a four-year, $10.3 million deal with a massive $9 million guaranteed, and that single domino cracked the deadlock. Since then, Chicago inked two of their second-rounders, and more deals have been rolling in by the hour.
Eagles Safety Battle Heating Up
That’s good news for Mukuba, and for the Eagles, because while technically he can’t be fined for skipping camp while unsigned, every missed rep is a blow to his chances of winning the starting job.
With C.J. Gardner-Johnson now in Houston, the door is wide open. Vic Fangio has made it clear: the safety spot is up for grabs. Mukuba is battling Sydney Brown and Tristin McCollum, but many inside the building believe he’s the frontrunner. That is… if he shows up on time.
His projected contract is a four-year deal worth $7.155 million. Last year’s 64th pick (Renardo Green) only got 52.4% guaranteed. Mukuba’s camp obviously wants more than that — especially after what the top of the round just pulled in.
Eagles Need Mukuba on the Field, Not in a Negotiation Room
Let’s be real: Mukuba didn’t get drafted to ride the bench. The Eagles saw something in him — range, instincts, versatility — that fits what Fangio wants on the back end. But the one thing he can’t afford to miss is time.
With training camp just days away, it’s finally looking like both sides might come to terms before things get messy. Now that the market has stabilized, don’t be surprised if Mukuba signs soon and hits the ground running with the rest of the rookie class.
And with how wide open that safety spot is, the Eagles better hope he does.
