Kyle Schwarber Home Run

Dave Dombrowski won’t say it but the Phillies can’t let Kyle Schwarber walk

Kyle Schwarber’s future in Philly is a big question mark, and Dave Dombrowski just poured a little more gasoline on the fire. The Phillies’ president of baseball operations went on MLB Now this week and got asked about Schwarber’s expiring contract.

He didn’t commit to anything. But he also couldn’t stop praising him.

Dave Dombrowski on Kyle Schwarber

“Well, he’s great. I can’t say one bad thing about Kyle Schwarber. He’s a tremendous hitter, clutch hitter, leader in the clubhouse. He’s everything that you want with a club. We’d love to have him back in the organization for years to come…”

“No, it probably won’t be easy, but he’s shined as a Phillie, the organization loves him, the fans love him and I think he enjoys being part of the organization. We’ll wait and see what happens, but we’re welcoming him with open arms, by all means.”

I’m reading that and thinking that obviously, Dombo and the Phillies want Kyle Schwarber to remain in Philly but an extension isn’t coming until the offseason and the bidding is going to be a messy one.

Kyle Schwarber’s Best Year Yet

The numbers speak for themselves. Schwarber leads the National League with 42 home runs, 12 of them in just 22 games since the All-Star break. Since signing in 2022, he’s hit 172 bombs in red pinstripes and somehow, he’s only getting more dangerous.

He didn’t just bring power. He brought a ring, a postseason résumé, and a vibe shift to a clubhouse that had been missing October baseball for over a decade.

The Real Captain of the Phillies

Forget the title, Schwarber is the clubhouse leader. Brandon Marsh calls him “dad.” Bryce Harper is practically campaigning to keep him here. Dombrowski even admitted leadership was one of the biggest selling points when they signed him back in 2022, calling him “a proven winner” and “a unique person.”

The Coming Offseason Battle

Schwarber is hitting free agency this winter. Other teams will be lined up with checkbooks ready, and this front office will have a decision to make.

Obviously, they should pay the man who helped change the culture of baseball in Philly while still mashing at a historic clip. Watching him walk and attempting to replace him would be an absolute mess.

There’s no real replacement. Not for the bat, not for the postseason clutch gene, and definitely not for the leadership.

The Phillies have a championship window that’s wide open. Letting Kyle Schwarber leave would slam it shut much, much faster.
