Phillies smacked around in Cincy, bats remain silent in 8-0 shutout
That was ugly. After rolling into Cincinnati fresh off a sweep of the Rangers, the Phillies promptly dropped two-of-three to the Reds, capped off by an 8-0 loss on Wednesday night that felt like it lasted 12 innings instead of nine.
The big blow came in the seventh, when Miguel Andújar fouled off two straight sliders before depositing the sixth one he saw from Jordan Romano into the left-field seats for a grand slam. It was the ultimate “we’re done here” moment.
Should be the last pitch Jordan Romano ever throws for the Phillies
Hunter Greene shoves, Sánchez scuffles
Hunter Greene looked every bit like the Reds’ ace in his first big league start since June 3, going six shutout innings, striking out six, walking none, and giving up just three hits. The Phillies never really sniffed a rally.
Cristopher Sánchez, on the other hand, wasn’t bad early but let things snowball. He finished with four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings. Things completely unraveled in the sixth when Noelvi Marte singled home a run and then came around to score thanks to throwing errors by both Brandon Marsh and Sánchez.
Reds Keep Piling On
Noelvi Marte and Austin Hays each chipped in RBIs before Andújar blew the game open. Elly De La Cruz did Elly De La Cruz things — two hits, two runs scored — while the Reds got production up and down the lineup. Andújar has now homered in back-to-back games and three of his last four. Not exactly the guy you want getting hot against you.
Up Next for the Phillies
The Phillies will try to flush this one fast as they head to D.C. for a four-game set with the Nationals. Jesús Luzardo (11-5, 4.20 ERA) gets the ball Thursday night against Brad Lord (3-6, 3.28 ERA).
