Zack Wheeler needs surgery, out for rest of season

Brutal news out of South Philly. Zack Wheeler’s season is officially over.

After undergoing a successful blood clot removal earlier this week, follow-up evaluations revealed that Wheeler has been diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome.

The recommended course of action is thoracic outlet decompression surgery, which he’ll undergo in the coming weeks.

Zack Wheeler needs surgery, out for rest of season

The expected recovery timeline? 6–8 months. That puts Zack Wheeler out not just for the remainder of 2025, but also sets up a challenging road back for the start of 2026.

The Zack Wheeler Death March

  • No Wheeler in October. He’s been the ace of the staff for half a decade. Losing him for Red October is devastating.
  • Cristopher Sánchez becomes “the guy.” He’s pitched like a Cy Young contender all summer and now officially slides into the No. 1 spot. Ranger Suárez will need to replicate his early-season form, and Aaron Nola has to stabilize after missing time.
  • Bullpen arms more important than ever. With Wheeler gone, Rob Thomson can’t afford short starts. Orion Kerkering, Jhoan Duran, David Robertson, and Matt Strahm will be leaned on heavily.
  • Rotation depth under the microscope. Jesús Luzardo’s acquisition looms even larger, but he and Nola haven’t exactly been models of consistency. If the Phillies want to survive October, they’ll need quality from all corners.

Big Picture

Zack Wheeler’s been the heartbeat of this staff since 2020. A bulldog in October. A guy who lived up to every dollar of his contract.

Now, with thoracic outlet syndrome a diagnosis that’s derailed plenty of careers (Shoutout Markelle Fultz), his future is suddenly in question.

For 2025, the Phillies are still in the driver’s seat in the NL East. They’ve got the bats, they’ve got enough pitching to make noise, but without Zack Wheeler, the margin for error in the postseason shrinks to nothing.
