Phillies’ postseason rotation plans are much clearer after Zack Wheeler news
The Phillies got the gut punch they were dreading with Zack Wheeler’s 2025 season officially over.
Wheeler is headed for thoracic outlet surgery after his blood clot scare, with recovery expected to take 6–8 months. He was in the middle of one of the best years of his career, and now he won’t throw another pitch until sometime in 2026.
Phillies are now left looking for the silver lining and the good news is that this rotation is still built to compete in October.
Cristopher Sánchez Steps Into the Ace Role
No question about it, Cristopher Sánchez is now the guy. His breakout has been one of the biggest stories in baseball this season, and he’s ready to carry the staff.
Through 25 starts, Sánchez is 11-4 with a 2.46 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 169 strikeouts in 157 innings. He’s been as good as anyone in the league since June and could very well finish top-two in the NL Cy Young race. Sanchez was Wheeler’s co-ace already and now he’s the one getting the ball in Game 1 of October.

Ranger Suárez and Jesús Luzardo Slot In
The depth behind Sánchez is strong. Ranger Suárez has been excellent again, with the poise and playoff experience that makes him perfect for Game 2. Behind him, the Phillies will lean on Jesús Luzardo, who has managed to re-settle in since the deadline.
That already gives the Phillies three legitimate left-handed starters to throw at anybody and with the built-in off days in October, Sánchez could pitch twice in a five-game NLDS without issue.
No, I didn’t forget about Aaron Nola
Obviously, Aaron Nola is still very much in this rotation. The veteran right-hander finally got back in the win column Saturday night, striking out six over six innings against Washington.
Aaron Nola back in the win column, Phillies take down Nationals 6-4
It’s been a frustrating, injury-plagued year for Nola (2-7, 6.92 ERA), but his importance can’t be overstated. This is still a guy who’s started playoff games, who’s capable of missing bats, and who can be the steady hand behind Sánchez and Suárez if he finds his rhythm again. If the Phillies get even solid Nola, it changes everything about how deep this team can go.
Projected October Rotation (Without Wheeler)
- Game 1: Cristopher Sánchez
- Game 2: Ranger Suárez
- Game 3: Aaron Nola or Jesús Luzardo
- Game 4 (if needed): Sánchez on regular rest
That’s still a postseason rotation that stacks up with the best in the NL.
The Phillies are not dead.
Sánchez has turned into a frontline ace, Suárez is steady as they come, Luzardo has swing-and-miss stuff, and Nola is still lurking with the chance to make his season matter in October.
This isn’t a collapse. It’s a reshuffle. And if Sánchez keeps dominating, the Phillies will still be one of the toughest outs in baseball come October.
