WATCH: Marlins reliever Tyler Phillips gives brutally honest postgame interview that will have opposing hitters shaking in their cleats
You know how most relievers come off the mound after a save, smile for the cameras, and toss out a couple of clichés about “just trying to help the team win?” Yeah, not Tyler Phillips.
Honestly, I was way ahead of this story. Back in early-August, I saw a video of Tyler Phillips punching himself in the face and wrote about it and now, he’s gone viral by adding a terrifying postgame interview to the entire ordeal.
WATCH: Former Phillies pitcher Tyler Phillips has an elite entrance for the Miami Marlins
The former Phillies pitcher, yes, the same guy who made his MLB debut here last year, locked down a six-pitch save for the Marlins on Sunday, then gave what might be the scariest postgame interview in baseball history.
When asked when he knew he’d be pitching on back-to-back days, Phillips’ answer was simple. The kid is insanely pissed off that he got the call, while also saying that he was ready to go. When asked why he was pissed off, Tyler Phillips didn’t mince words. He absolutely hates hitters, which in my opinion, is a great quality to have as a reliever.
I mean come on, that’s cinema. The best part is when Tyler Phillips was asked how long it takes him to cool off after an outing and he deadpanned saying that he never cools down.
Coincidentally, I do the same thing every morning as I pull myself out of a drunken slumber to get my ass to work.
So yes, I absolutely love this from Phillips. I really wish the Phillies bullpen was stacked with absolute animals like this. Those aren’t even love taps. Phillips is quite literally smacking the shit out of his own face before taking the mound.
It has to be hard getting “up” to pitch for the Marlins, especially when you started out as a member of your hometown Philadelphia Phillies. Maybe slapping the shit out of your face is the only way to lock in and find any type of energy in Miami?
Either way, the results are clearly paying off. To his credit, Phillips has been nails lately. After being DFA’d by the Phillies and dumped to Miami for cash considerations in March, he’s quietly put together a strong stretch.
A 0.59 ERA in July, still cruising in August, and his season ERA sits at 3.27. Not bad for a guy who got rocked here in Philly last year (6.87 ERA in eight games).
But man…this is different energy. “I don’t like hitters” is some pure movie villain shit. Like a guy who spends the whole game staring into the dugout plotting your demise.
We all love Jhoan Duran’s entrance but Tyler Phillips’ slap routine is a close second.
Phillies fans who remember his cup of coffee here might be laughing now, but if Phillips really has figured it out and keeps this psycho closer energy going, Tyler Phillips might carve out a legit career in Miami. Just…don’t make eye contact with him.
