A horse named after Big Dom won on Travers Stakes Day at Saratoga
The legend of Big Dom just refuses to stop growing.
On Travers Stakes Day up in Saratoga, a horse named Big Dom made his debut and of course, he came from behind to win.
Green silks, late charge, straight into the winner’s circle. Couldn’t have scripted it better.
A horse named after Big Dom won on Travers Stakes Day at Saratoga
“THE FIFTH HORSE, IN THE SIXTH RACE, I THINK HIS NAME WAS….”
Shoutout The Hold Steady.
Anyways, Here’s How It Happened
The horse’s owner, Greg Tramontin, is a Baton Rouge guy and a close friend of former Eagles punter Donnie Jones. A couple years back, Jones introduced Tramontin to Big Dom at The Saloon in Philly.
They had a night out with some laughs and somewhere in the mix, Tramontin promised Dom that if he ever got a colt, he’d name it after him. Promise made, promise kept. Big Dom the horse was born, and now Big Dom the horse is 1-0.
The Meteoric Rise of Big Dom (the human)
It’s honestly insane how this guy has gone from being the quiet security guy on the Eagles sideline to a full-blown Philly folk hero. He’s been around forever, walking out with Andy Reid, Chip Kelly, and Doug Pederson, even appearing in commercials. One Dre Greenlaw finger poke later, and suddenly he’s everywhere:
- Sandwiches named after him in South Philly
- Trump giving him a shoutout at the White House
- Now a thoroughbred named in his honor
At this point I really don’t know how he does it. Somehow, he still carries that air of mystery. Nobody really knows everything about him, and that only makes him bigger.
What’s Next for Big Dom (the horse)
This isn’t just some novelty pony, either. The horse is a descendant of Street Sense, a Breeders Cup and Kentucky Derby champ.
He’s got the pedigree to back up the name. His next race is set for October 4th at Keeneland, a legit test to see how good he really is.
Imagine the Eagles’ security boss with a horse running in the Kentucky Derby. South Philly would caravan straight to Louisville. From sandwiches to shoutouts to Saratoga winners, the reach is unstoppable. The Eagles might be gunning for another Super Bowl, but Big Dom already has a Derby hopeful. Philly stays winning.
