Spike Eskin wimps out during the entirety of Jalen Hurts’ appearance on WIP
For months now, Spike Eskin has been running his mouth about Jalen Hurts.
All season long, all offseason long, even in the post–Super Bowl glow, Eskin’s been the conductor of the Jalen Hurts Hate Train. He’s spent entire shows nitpicking, tossing out quarterback trade fantasies, and sprinkling in little backhanded “compliments” like, “He’s not a top-five quarterback, but…”
Today was supposed to be different. Today, Hurts hopped on the WIP afternoon show. This was Spike’s moment to finally stand on business, to say it with his chest, to tell the Eagles’ franchise QB exactly what he’s been saying behind his back for months.
And what happened? Surprise, surprise… Spike Eskin completely crumbled.
The Eskin Playbook
Instead of doubling down, Eskin backpedaled. Instead of planting his flag, he tiptoed. Hurts was calm, respectful, and handled himself the way he always does — measured, professional, unfazed. Meanwhile, Spike went soft. All that tough talk? Gone.
This wasn’t a man standing on business. This was a guy fumbling his chance to prove he really believes the nonsense he spews.

On Brand, Honestly
It’s exactly what you’d expect. Spike Eskin thrives in the safe zone. His schtick is simply potshots from behind the mic, quarterback rankings designed for outrage, takes that only exist to stir up the fanbase.
When Hurts was actually on the other end of the line, he shrank.
Calling Hurts “not a top-five quarterback” isn’t bold analysis. It’s lazy, it’s lame, and it’s predictable. When given the chance to defend it directly, Eskin did what Eskin does, by folding faster than a lawn chair.
I guess Spike Eskin just wanted to make Jalen Hurts laugh?

Look, I Get It…
You can’t just bring the Super Bowl LIX MVP onto your show and start talking shit to his face. That’s not going to work, especially when your station is the official broadcast partner of the Philadelphia Eagles. I get that.
But here’s the thing: I do expect Spike Eskin, a guy who followed in his father’s footsteps by ruining Philly sports talk radio, to at least stand on what he’s been force-feeding Eagles fans every single day.
Instead? We got softball questions and awkward laughter.
He was trying to make Jalen laugh? I guess Jalen’s aura was just too much for Spike. When it came time to actually say how he really feels, he didn’t have the stones.
Damage Control
he doesn't show a lot of emotion, so I was glad he showed some and he chuckled when I explained to him why it was important to us to know why. So both.

I want consistency
I couldn’t find many more clips floating around on Twitter, but I actually listened to the whole segment on my phone while I was pumping iron at Planet Fitness. And outside of the pleasantries, the questions were about:
- Jalen’s new book
- New offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo
- His relationship with Michael Jordan
That was it. Nothing about the criticisms. Nothing about the constant “not a top-five QB” jabs. Nothing about all the quarterbacks Eskin swore he’d trade Hurts for. Just fluff.
On Brand for Spike
And honestly, it’s perfectly on brand. Spike thrives in the safe zone: potshots when the subject isn’t in the room, quarterback rankings designed to stir outrage, and takes that don’t need to be defended in real time. Put Jalen Hurts on the line and suddenly all that fake bravado evaporates.
Jalen Hurts doesn’t need to defend himself. His play and his Super Bowl MVP already did that. The guy is the franchise.
Spike Eskin had his shot to stand on business today.
Instead, business was closed before it even opened.
