Eagles poised to end 93-year curse vs. Cowboys Thursday night

The Eagles are one win away from rewriting nearly a century of franchise history. After 93 years of football in this city, the Birds have never once had a winning all-time regular season record. Not once. Thursday night against the Cowboys at the Linc, that all changes.

The Weight of 93 Years

The Eagles first took the field in 1933. Seven games in, they were sitting at 3-3-1 and sitting pretty at .500. That was the last time they weren’t living below water. They lost the next week and the losing record has followed them ever since — through generations, through eras, through heartbreaks, and even through a Super Bowl parade on Broad Street.

From 1933 all the way up until the late 1980s, this team was a mess. By 1987, they had sunk to 96 games under .500. Think about that: nearly a hundred games in the hole. The climb back started with a win over the Cowboys that season, and ever since, it’s been a slow crawl toward even.

The Long Climb Back

The real turnaround came in 1988 when the Eagles ripped off five straight 10-win seasons. From there, it was a long, painful grind back to relevance. Since the middle of the 2021 season, though, things have accelerated in a way this franchise has never seen before. The Eagles are 45-13 since then, making up 32 games in just three and a half years.

Now here we are. Heading into Thursday night, the all-time record sits at 638-639-27. One game under. One more win against Dallas, and the Eagles will finally sit at .500 for the first time since December of 1933.

What It Means for Eagles vs. Cowboys

Of course it has to be the Cowboys standing in the way. Poetic, isn’t it? The same franchise that Philly beat in 1987 to begin this long climb out of the basement is the one blocking the door to history. Beat Dallas under the lights at the Linc, and the Eagles won’t just be starting their 2025 season 1-0 — they’ll finally put 93 years of mediocrity behind them.

The moment doesn’t win a Lombardi. It doesn’t hang a banner. But it matters. Because for the first time in nearly a century, the Eagles won’t be a losing franchise.

All it takes is one more victory. One more night of South Philly chaos. One more win over the hated Cowboys. If the Eagles handle business Thursday, the climb is complete. And the next step — over .500 — will finally give this city the all-time winning record it’s been waiting on since Bert Bell first put a team together back in 1933.

The Eagles have made us wait long enough. Time to make history.
