Phillies shift to 6-man rotation in September, Walker Buehler set for debut on the 12th

Hours after signing Walker Buehler to a minor-league deal, Dave Dombrowski confirmed the Phillies’ plan that a six-man rotation is coming, and Buehler will make his debut on September 12th against the Royals at Citizens Bank Park.

Walker Buehler will first report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he’s scheduled to start September 6th. Assuming things go smoothly, he’ll slot into Philly’s rotation the following week.

The Phillies 6-Man Rotation Was Always The Plan

The Phillies always wanted to shift to a six-man rotation late in the season, but Zack Wheeler’s injury forced them to scrap it.

Adding Buehler lets them bring that plan back, and it could pay off big.

With Cristopher Sánchez, Ranger Suárez, Jesús Luzardo, and Aaron Nola all set to carry heavy workloads in October, an extra day of rest down the stretch is exactly what this staff needs.

It also gives Taijuan Walker some breathing room as the back-end guy. Even if Buehler isn’t dominant right away, the innings matter.

You Can Lock In The Phillies’ Postseason Rotation Too

Dombrowski wouldn’t commit to anything beyond Buehler’s debut, but the postseason picture feels clear. Sánchez, Luzardo, Suárez, and Nola are all getting playoff starts. Walker’s a depth arm. Buehler’s most likely role? A bullpen weapon.

And honestly, that’s not a bad thing. Buehler’s resume speaks for itself. He’s a two-time All-Star, two-time World Series champ, and a proven playoff riser. If he can regain even part of that form, he’s exactly the type of arm you want coming out of the pen in October.

The Plan Moving Forward

Here’s how the six-man rotation sets up beginning September 12th:

  1. Cristopher Sánchez
  2. Jesús Luzardo
  3. Ranger Suárez
  4. Aaron Nola
  5. Taijuan Walker
  6. Walker Buehler

The move gives everyone extra rest through the stretch run, lines up the rotation for the postseason, and takes a low-risk swing on a high-upside veteran. For a team in first place with October on the horizon, that’s a smart bet.
