Report: Xavier Worthy likely to miss Week 2 matchup against Eagles after shoulder injury in Brazil

The Kansas City Chiefs are limping into Week 2, and the timing couldn’t be better for the Philadelphia Eagles. Xavier Worthy, who quickly became Patrick Mahomes’ most dynamic target last season, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the opener against the Chargers.

While the Chiefs are saying he’s still undergoing tests and seeking a second opinion, all signs point to him missing next Sunday’s Super Bowl LIX rematch in KC.

Worthy isn’t just another body in Andy Reid’s offense. The 2024 first-round pick led the Chiefs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns as a rookie. He added a burst of speed they haven’t had since Tyreek Hill left town, and he showed up big in the playoffs with three touchdowns, two of them in garbage time of last year’s Super Bowl.

Now? Kansas City is staring at life without Worthy and Rashee Rice, who’s still serving a suspension until Week 7. That means Mahomes is left trying to make it work with JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, and Marquise Brown. Respectfully, that’s not exactly the stuff of nightmares for the Birds defense.

What It Means for the Eagles

For the Birds, this is a dream scenario. They had trouble finding their footing in Week 1. Dallas had 307 total yards Thursday night, which isn’t awful, but the defense didn’t look like they did at the end of last season. That’s to be expected, especially with Jalen Carter out of the lineup.

Taking Xavier Worthy off the field means the Chiefs’ most explosive option is gone, leaving Mahomes with fewer ways to stretch the field.

And while we all know Patrick Mahomes can make magic with whoever is out there, football is still about matchups. Losing Worthy tilts the advantage even further toward Vic Fangio’s defense. If Marquise Brown is your WR1 at Arrowhead next Sunday afternoon, good luck.

The Eagles don’t need any extra help to beat Kansas City, but the football gods might have handed them some anyway. With Xavier Worthy likely sidelined, Kansas City’s already thin receiving corps looks even shakier.
