Former Eagles OC Kellen Moore botches time management in Saints debut
You probably saw the headline and thought, “Why the hell are we talking about the New Orleans Saints?” Fair. But when the guy screwing up on national TV was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator just eight months ago, it’s worth a look.
Kellen Moore made his head coaching debut with the Saints on Sunday against Kyler Murray and the Cardinals.
For the record, I liked Moore in Philly. We won a Super Bowl with him running the offense, and the talk all year about him getting a head job proved to be true. No hard feelings there but I would’ve preferred if he stuck around to defend the crown in Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, not everyone is wired like that.
But I would have preferred if he stayed here in Philadelphia to defend our crown as the best in the world. Unfortunately, not everyone is wired like me when it comes to an elite competitive nature—and that’s okay.
Anyways, back to Sunday.
The Saints had all three timeouts in their pocket as Arizona drove inside the red zone before halftime. The Cards got a gift penalty at the two-minute warning, and instead of managing the clock, Moore just froze.
Kyler Murray and James Conner milked every last second, then punched it in with a shovel pass to go up 14-10. That left Moore with 28 seconds and three unused timeouts.
His response was to hand off to Kamara up the middle and jog into the locker room.
Kellen Moore clock management disaster class
Kellen Moore to CBS: "We were just trying to save our timeouts as much as we could. They did a good job of bleeding the clock out and putting (themselves) in a favorable position. We didn't get enough yards there to play it out right there at the end of the half."

Déjà Vu of Early Andy Reid
It was classic rookie head coach stuff. Moore looked like early-days Andy Reid, hoarding timeouts like rollover minutes on an old Verizon plan. Three still in his pocket, zero points to show for it.
Protecting Rattler?
Maybe he was just scared of Spencer Rattler. Can’t blame him entirely if that’s the case.
Rattler already got saved by a defensive penalty that erased what should’ve been an interception. He threw more picks than touchdowns last year, so I get being cautious. Either way, this is the NFL and you don’t play scared. You don’t punt on an end-of-half possession when the ball’s coming back to you. That’s how you lose winnable games.
Welcome to the Big Leagues
Moore’s still a sharp offensive mind, but Sunday showed how different the head coaching chair is. Managing the clock. Reading situations. Setting the tone. Those things matter just as much as play design. And if he learned anything from watching Nick Sirianni last season, it should’ve been that.
It’s only one game, sure, but early moments define culture. Kellen Moore’s first one as a head coach was watching 90 valuable seconds bleed off the clock while his offense sat on their hands. That’s not even competent football, brother.
