Hang the Banner: Jalen Hurts named “Honorary Asian of the Week” by online content creator

Eagles QB and Super Bowl Champion Jalen Hurts might need to expand his trophy cabinet. One Lombardi, one Super Bowl MVP, and two NFC Championships will have to make room for his latest award: Honorary Asian of the Week.

Jalen Hurts will surely be honored by receiving such a prestigious accolade from comedian Cal Murata:

First of all, hell yeah, brother. That’s yet another accomplishment for one of the most decorated athletes in the history of Philadelphia sports. Hang the banner.

Our friend Cal here is also 100% correct in his assessment. Sure, his mispronunciation of concerto was a little jarring, but Jalen Hurts does have that singular level of focus and emotional regulation only seen in certain groups of people.

And, Jalen, if you ever need to talk, I have first-hand experience of being mistaken for an Asian man, both based on looks and general vibe. It’s far from a bad thing, of course, but it’s definitely jarring in the moment.

I’ll never forget being in bed with a lovely woman and her turning around, studying my face intently, and saying, “You look very ethnic.” When I asked her what she meant by that, she replied, “I don’t know are you like part Japanese or something?”

I am Italian, Polish, and Irish. So, no, but I appreciate the effort. Admittedly, that was a wild thing to say, but I was 19 and she was really hot, so I just let it slide. Anyway, she’s engaged now to a guy that looks even more Japanese than I do, so clearly she’s doing something right.

Another time I had a college girlfriend come visit my parents house, where my kindergarten class photo was on display. She walks up and immediately goes “OMG you were so cute!” and points directly to a kid in the front row… it was not me, but an Asian boy by the name of Brian.

When I pointed this out, she doubled down and said “you could be twins!” I don’t even have words for that.

She’s also engaged now. My life is a cruel, sick and, at times, racist joke.

What was I talking about again? Oh, right, Jalen Hurts being spiritually Asian. Yeah, spot on, Cal. Keep up the good work.
