Doug Pederson reveals a fascinating nugget that lead to the double doink in the 2019 Wildcard matchup between the Bears & Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles fans will never forget where they were on January 6, 2019. Wild Card Sunday in Chicago. Mitch Trubisky (yes, Mitch Trubisky) somehow put together a late drive to give the Bears a shot at knocking out the defending Super Bowl champs. All that stood in the way was a 43-yard field goal attempt from Cody Parkey.
We all know what happened next: Doink… Doink… Ballgame.
The Eagles survive, the Bears implode, and the phrase “Double Doink” is cemented in football history forever.
Doug Pederson Spilled The Beans
Former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was on Pardon My Take this week, and he dropped a little nugget that makes that game even more legendary. According to Doug, his special teams coordinator told him something crazy about Parkey during the season:
When Cody Parkey kicks without a timeout? Over 90% accuracy.
When the opposing team calls a timeout before the kick? That percentage gets cut nearly in half.
HALF.

Of course, Treyvon Hester actually got a hand on the ball before it ricocheted off the upright, so you can credit the block just as much as the timeout. But still…
Special Teams is a major part of the game. And clearly Howie Roseman and the Eagles value it as they have had two blocked kicks lead to touchdowns this season.
