VJ Edgecombe

VJ Edgecombe is making me Trust The Process again

So much for easing a rookie in slowly. VJ Edgecombe walked into TD Garden for his first NBA game, looked around at all those ring-chasing Boston bozos, and decided to start lighting things on fire.

  • 34 points.
  • Seven boards.
  • Three assists.
  • Five threes.
  • 42 minutes.
  • A win.

On the road. In Boston. On opening night.

That’s not normal. That’s not “promising rookie debut” territory. That’s historic. The only players in NBA history to score more in a debut are Wilt Chamberlain and Frank Selvy — meaning VJ Edgecombe just logged the third-highest scoring debut in league history. And for the Sixers? He passed Allen Iverson for the most points ever scored in a Philly debut.

This wasn’t empty stat-chasing. The Sixers actually needed VJ to go off last night. Embiid was on a minutes leash and looked like he hadn’t touched a basketball since May. Maxey was doing Maxey things (40-point flamethrower performance), but everyone else was sleepwalking early.

Enter the rookie.

He dropped 14 in the first quarter, immediately silencing the Boston crowd. He attacked mismatches, buried catch-and-shoot threes, and forced Boston to actually adjust their defense. Nick Nurse showed his hand early — he trusts this kid. You don’t give a teenager 42 minutes in his debut unless you know what you have.

This is officially not a development project. VJ Edgecombe is already a real piece of this team.

Why VJ Edgecombe already looks built for Philadelphia

He plays downhill. He plays aggressive. He doesn’t flinch in big moments. That’s the entire checklist for surviving in Philly. You could actually feel the connection forming — Maxey and VJ started cooking together like they’ve been teammates for three years.

He even missed two free throws late and didn’t fold. Didn’t avoid the ball. Didn’t turtle. That matters. A lot of guys shrink when things go wrong in Boston. VJ shrugged and got right back in the action.

Give him time and a little polishing, and we’re talking about a legit two-way scoring guard next to Maxey. And if you don’t think that should terrify the rest of the East, you’re lying to yourself.

What happens next for VJ Edgecombe and the Sixers?

Look, nobody is expecting 34 per night. Teams are going to adjust. They’ll try to trap him high, body him on drives, and run him into screens until he begs for mercy. That’s fine. The important part is this: the talent is real. The mentality is real. The role is already real.

Make no mistake — this kid just changed the ceiling of the 76ers.

Bookmark this. Screenshot it. Send it to your uncle who still thinks rookies should “come off the bench and learn.” VJ Edgecombe is here now, and if last night is any indication, he’s not waiting around to be great.
