Kelly Oubre Jr. catches fire, Sixers light up Nets 129-105

The Sixers didn’t have Joel Embiid, and it didn’t matter. Kelly Oubre Jr. dropped 29 points on just 11 shots, including 22 in a ridiculous first quarter, as the Sixers smoked the Brooklyn Nets 129-105 on Sunday night.

Tyrese Maxey added 26 points and seven assists, Quentin Grimes came off the bench with 22 points and 13 assists, and VJ Edgecombe continued to flash his athleticism with 16 points.

The win moves the Sixers to 5-1 to start the year, while the Nets fell to 0-6, good for their worst start since 2015.

The Kelly Oubre Jr. Takeover

Kelly Oubre Jr. wasted no time setting the tone. He caught fire in the first quarter, drilling jumpers, attacking the rim, and scoring 22 points before the buzzer.

He finished the night 9-for-11 from the field and looked completely in rhythm before rolling his ankle late in the third quarter. The forward limped off but later returned to the bench after being cleared, a good sign for the Sixers moving forward.

After the game, Oubre reflected on his evolution as a scorer and how slowing the game down has elevated his play.
“Just letting the game come to me,” he said. “Not forcing, not rushing, just trusting the work I put in over the summer. I want people to watch me play and see control, not chaos.”

Through six games, Oubre is averaging nearly 20 points per game on absurd efficiency, looking more comfortable than ever in Nick Nurse’s offense.

Maxey Keeps Cooking

Tyrese Maxey continued his hot start with another dynamic performance. He pushed the pace, hit tough shots, and once again proved he’s become the engine of this offense. A deep pull-up three to start the third quarter that put Philly up 21 and deflated the crowd at Barclays Center.

The Kyle Lowry Effect

At 39, Lowry made his season debut and instantly reminded everyone why his presence matters. The Philly native entered late in the game and drained a corner three to cap off his 20th NBA season, a shot the bench celebrated like a playoff buzzer-beater.

Depth on Display

Quentin Grimes was great, posting 22 points and a career-high 13 assists. Trendon Watford also shined against his former team with 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, earning high praise from Nick Nurse.

Next Up

The Sixers’ bench looked sharp and connected, a promising sign as the team navigates stretches without Embiid. They will continue their road trip Tuesday night in Chicago to face the Bulls, with Embiid expected to return from rest.

For now, Philly sits near the top of the East at 5-1, showing that even without their MVP, they can roll into any arena and dominate. Kelly Oubre Jr. might not be the star anyone expected to carry the Sixers on a Sunday night in Brooklyn but right now, he’s playing like one.
