Union advance to Semifinals after first-round sweep of Chicago Fire
The Philadelphia Union are moving on after a dominant 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire, completing a first-round sweep and punching their ticket to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the fifth time in club history.
From the opening whistle, the Union controlled every inch of the match. Three goals in the first 35 minutes buried Chicago early, with Tai Baribo leading the charge.
Tai Baribo Finds His Form at the Perfect Time
After weeks of frustration, Tai Baribo finally broke through. The Israeli striker opened the scoring in the eighth minute and struck again before halftime to secure his first brace since May.
It was the kind of breakout performance that can flip an entire postseason narrative. With Mikael Uhre sidelined due to a knee issue, Baribo stepped into the spotlight and delivered exactly what the Union needed up top.
Chicago Falters Without Chris Brady
Chicago’s playoff hopes took a massive hit before kickoff when starting goalkeeper Chris Brady was ruled out. Veteran backup Jeff Gal was forced into action, and Philly wasted no time testing him.
Baribo’s opener slipped past the replacement keeper, and a poor clearance from Gal in the 35th minute set up Bruno Damiani to make it 2-0. The Fire never recovered from the early barrage.
Andre Blake Shuts the Door
Even in control, Andre Blake came through with a crucial penalty save in the 33rd minute to preserve the clean sheet.
It was the Jamaican international’s 15th postseason appearance for Philadelphia, and it reminded everyone why he remains one of the best keepers in MLS.
From that point forward, it was smooth sailing for the Union defense. Chicago had no answers for Blake or Philadelphia’s compact back line.
Andre Blake HUGE penalty kick save
With the international break looming, the Union now get a well-earned rest before the MLS Cup Playoffs resume. Several players, including Blake, Baribo, and Jean-Jacques, will leave for national team duty before returning to Chester later this month.
Philadelphia will face the winner of Charlotte FC vs. New York City FC in the Eastern Conference Semifinal on November 22 or 23.
A three-week break might disrupt some momentum, but if this performance was any indication, the Union look sharp, confident, and ready for whoever comes next. The Supporters’ Shield winners are officially rolling again, and the road to the MLS Cup still runs through Chester.
