Eagles interception leader Drew Mukuba facing surgery that could end his season
Welp, if you could believe it, Sunday just got worse. The Eagles got hit with another brutal injury, with safety Drew Mukuba breaking his ankle in the final minute of the disaster in Dallas and now needs surgery.
Drew Mukuba could be done for the season
The injury happened on the George Pickens catch that set up the Cowboys’ game winning field goal. Drew Mukuba got rolled up on as Pickens went down, perfectly fitting the theme of a night where everything fell apart at once.
Drew Mukuba left the field on crutches and looked devastated in the locker room. Nick Sirianni did not confirm the surgery on Monday, but he pretty much admitted the obvious saying that Mukuba would be out for “some time” and that “we will see.”
It is a brutal blow because Mukuba was quietly becoming a major difference maker. After a rough start to the year, he settled in and became one of the Eagles’ most dependable defenders.
He leads the team with two interceptions and is the first Eagles rookie with multiple picks since 2018. He has played 672 snaps, which is 93 percent of the defensive total, and the fourth most among NFL rookie defenders.
He was one of the only players in the secondary you could actually trust. Now he is gone at the worst possible time.
The Eagles Safety Depth Chart is a Total Mess
Reed Blankenship left the game with a thigh injury. Mukuba is now out indefinitely. That leaves Sydney Brown as the only healthy safety on the roster, and he barely saw the field through the first ten games of the season.
Marcus Epps is still on injured reserve for at least another week. Slot corner Michael Carter had to play safety out of pure desperation on Sunday. Practice squad options include Andre Sam and Parry Nickerson, which is the NFL equivalent of waving a white flag.
The Eagles might even need to move Cooper DeJean to safety. That would be a fun idea if the cornerback room was not also falling apart after Adoree Jackson left the game injured.
Sirianni tried to put a positive spin on the situation, rolling with the “next man up” line that typically sounds great, but not when the locker room is beaten up already.
The Eagles are about to play a game in four days with one actual safety, a slot corner learning a new position on the fly, and two practice squad bodies who have spent more time holding helmets than wearing them.
Drew Mukuba going down is a massive loss for a secondary already hanging by a thread. He was stabilizing the back end of the defense. Now the Eagles are hoping to patch together a lineup on a short week.
The Bears come to town on Friday. Buckle up.
