Sixers Injury Updates: Embiid close to returning, Maxey banged up, Edgecombe out
The Sixers finally got a piece of positive injury news Monday night.
Joel Embiid has been upgraded to questionable for Tuesday’s matchup with the Magic at Xfinity Mobile Arena. For a team that has spent half of November duct-taping the rotation together, this is the closest thing to a miracle.
Unfortunately, tonight is an NBA Cup game which for whatever reason, the Sixers simply do not win. I’m going to blame it on the ridiculous court designs. It’s impossible to watch these games, let alone be the ones playing.
Sixers #ForTheCup Game 3:
They Hate The Process: Joel Embiid
Joel Embiid has played just 6 of the team’s first 16 games and has missed the last 7 with what started as “right knee soreness” and has now evolved into “right knee injury management.”
Nick Nurse said Embiid went through a full practice, which is the strongest sign yet that he is pushing to get back on the floor.
At this point, only fools believe that Joel Embiid doesn’t want to be out there. It’s just a matter of his ability to actually play basketball with the knee situation. He’s sick of sitting, and they are trying not to screw this up long-term.
VJ Edgecombe is not as close, Oubre and Bona still out
After sitting out against the Heat with left calf tightness, Nurse said his absence was “precautionary,” but he will miss the Magic game too.
Kelly Oubre Jr. (LCL sprain) and Adem Bona (ankle sprain) will both miss their fifth straight, leaving the Sixers thin on wings and frontcourt bodies.
Tyrese Maxey and Paul George are both listed as probable.
Maxey tweaked his shoulder early in the Heat game but stayed in and gutted through it. He said he expects to play.
The play likely came a few minutes into the game when he picked Bam Adebayo’s pocket. Maxey stayed aggressive the rest of the way, because that is who he is.
Orlando’s injury report is much cleaner.
Paolo Banchero (groin) and Mo Wagner (knee) are out, and everyone else is available for the 10–8 Magic.
The Sixers are 9–7, surviving on the strength of vibes, youth energy, and whatever Paul George’s legs have left. Embiid returning would help stabilize an offense that has spent the last two weeks looking like it’s stuck in traffic.
If nothing else, they need bodies. And finally, they might be getting one back.
